The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are on a roll. After returning to the Indian Premier League (IPL) last year following a two-year suspension, MS Dhoni’s side straightaway won their third title and are looking very much in form to successfully defend it this year as well. The CSK picked up their seventh win from eight games this season on Sunday, defeating Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) by 5 wickets at the Eden Gardens.

Though CSK made the headlines for the wrong reason recently after Dhoni was found rushing onto the ground from the dug-out to challenge the umpires over a no-ball decision in Jaipur earlier this week, their solid performance on the ground seems to have buried the controversy. After batting coach Mike Hussey, who praised the former India captain for the impact he leaves on the game, now former Australia international Shane Watson has backed his captain, especially in the wake of the no-ball controversy against Rajasthan Royals (RR).

“To me, it shows how much CSK means to him. What it means to be able to play well and win and be consistent,” the batting all-rounder Watson was quoted as saying to the media. The opening batsman, who hit a century in the final last year against Sunrisers Hyderabad to give the CSK their third IPL title, said this during the opening of an M&W outlet and launch of SG Summer Collection at a mall in Kolkata on Saturday.

Watson praises Dhoni’s captaincy

Dhoni was fined 50 per cent of his match fee because of his conduct in Jaipur where he confronted the umpires after one of them flip-flopped on calling a no-ball. Former India captain Bishan Singh Bedi flayed the authorities for not taking enough measure against the senior cricketer though another former India captain Sourav Ganguly was sympathetic towards his successor.

Watson praised Dhoni’s captaincy and mentioned that the latter is so experienced that he has got a prior understanding of the game. “He has been in all different situations and knows how to handle them. He knows how to get the best out of the players on and off the field.”
