Former Australian fast bowler Jason Gillespie slammed Pakistani bowler Sohail Tanvir for producing an obscene gesture after dismissing a batsman in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) on Friday (August 10), calling it “disgraceful”. Tanvir, a left-handed fast bowler, was slapped with a fine for his actions against Australian all-rounder Ben Cutting.

The 33-year-old Tanvir, who was playing for the Guyana Warriors, was hit for a massive six by St Kitts & Nevis’ Cutting in the game. The bowler responded in the next ball with a sharp Yorker that rattled the Queenslander’s middle stump and he was on his way back for 15 off 14 balls.

Warriors won the game by 6 wickets despite a 65-ball 86 from Nevis’ captain Chris Gayle. For the Warriors, Shimron Hetmyer lashed an unbeaten 79 off 45 balls to nullify Gayle’s innings. Tanvir, who returned with match figures of 1 for 24 in 4 overs, then did the disastrous by showing the middle fingers on both his hands to the departing batsman.

Gillespie not impressed

Though Billings was on his way to the pavilion, the Pakistani pacer’s act did not escape the attraction of the match referee Denavon Hayles and he was fined 15 per cent of his match fee.

Gillespie, now the head coach of Sussex, took to Twitter to call the act “disgraceful”.

Lynn calls it pathetic

Chris Lynn, Cutting’s mate in the Big Bash League team Brisbane Heat who is playing in the CPL for Trinbago Knight Riders, also criticised Tanvir’s gesture on social media.

“Pathetic send off from Tanvir,” Lynn tweeted.

Tanvir, who played two Tests, 62 ODIs and 57 T20Is for Pakistan between 2007 and 2017, was the highest wicket-taker in the last season of the CPL and was retained by the Warriors for $160,000 this season.

Warriors’ captain Shoaib Malik did not hide his pleasure after his team drove home with over three overs to spare. He said the pitch wasn’t conducive for hitting boundaries and praised Hetmyer and Chris Green who also played a crucial knock of 25 not out to see his team win.

The two teams meet next on August 28.
