KL Rahul forayed into international cricket back in 2014 and emerged as one of the brightest prospects. He also went on to show sparks of brilliance with the bat in hand. He has eight centuries, donning the national colours. Moreover, the Karnataka batsman also boasts of 17 half-centuries. However, he hasn’t shown enough consistency to stay put in his position in the team.

But last season’s Indian Premier League (IPL) turned to be impressive for the youngster. He was arguably Kings XI Punjab’s (KXIP) most successful batsman, having scored the most runs for them in the top order. The superlative performances also earned him a call-up to the Indian national team. He repaid the faith of the selectors and scored a masterful century in the T20I series.

Rahul bites the dust

To his dismay, he has had a torrid time thereafter. He failed in the other T20Is and the ODI series. Moreover, his poor run of form continued in the Test series as well, albeit he tried to make amends with a century in the final Test at Kennington Oval in London. Nevertheless, he flattered to deceive in the Test series against Windies, played in Rajkot and Hyderabad respectively.

Rahul was lacklustre even in the T20I series against Carlos Brathwaite’s men. Recently, he played the three-match T20I series and could only score 27 in the two opportunities he got. The selectors have shown faith in him and have selected him for the four-Test series against Australia, which is scheduled to get underway on Thursday, December 6 at the iconic Adelaide Oval.

Prior to the red-ball fixtures, India are playing a four-day warm-up match against Cricket Australia (CA) XI at Sydney Cricket Ground. The visiting team scored 358 runs and most of their batsmen turned out with half-centuries. In the meantime, Rahul could only score three runs off 18 balls before being nipped out by Jackson Coleman. Subsequently, he has been severely trolled on Twitter.
