India will take on England in the fourth Test at the Ageas Bowl starting August 30 and skipper Virat Kohli will look forward to adding to his impressive Test captaincy record. Kohli surpassed Sourav Ganguly after winning the third Test at Trent Bridge to become India’s second-most successful Test captain and former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag feels the 29-year-old will be regarded as one of India’s best captains in days to come.

Kohli took over as India’s full-fledged captain in August 2015 after serving as a stand-in skipper for some time and till date, he has led in 38 Tests and won 22 of them. He lost seven games as the captain while nine ended in a draw. India’s best captain in Tests so far remains MS Dhoni who led in 60 Tests and won 27.

However, with a success rate of over 57 percent, Kohli is by far the best captain India have seen in Tests since making debut eight decades back. Speaking on IndiaTV show ‘Cricket Ki Baat’, Sehwag, also a former captain, said, “No skipper constantly thinks about the number of matches he has won during his captaincy.

Our work as a captain is to play well and guide the team to the victory. As captain, Kohli’s performance is above par and he has improved in batting as well. He’ll be one of the best India captains in the time to come. There’s no doubt about that.”

Kohli leading the pack in ODI captaincy too

In ODIs, too, Kohli’s success rate 76.47 percent as the captain is a phenomenal that is way ahead of the rest. He has led India in 52 matches so far, winning 39 of them and lost 12. One was inconclusive. Even the most successful Indian skipper in ODIs, Dhoni, has a success percentage of 59.57.

In the T20I format, Kohli has led India in 17 matches and won 11 of them with a success percentage of 64.70. Rohit Sharma has tasted a greater success rate than Kohli (8 wins out of 9 games) though he has led in lesser number of games.

Coming back to India’s ongoing Test series against England, the visitors are trailing 1-2 at the moment and will have to produce a special performance in the last two games to register one of the biggest comebacks in a Test series. Winning the last two will also do Kohli’s captaincy record a world of good.
