Surrey Stars registered their 2nd consecutive win of the 2nd season of the Kia Super League with a 33-run win over the Lancashire Thunder. The Lancashire side earlier suffered a huge defeat in the first game against Yorkshire Diamonds. Surrey posted 133/6 in their 20 overs and bundled out Thunder for just 100 runs to bag a bonus point.
After electing to bat first, Tammy Beaumont powered Surrey to a quick start with a 25-ball 35. Tammy shared a 46-run stand with Marizanne Kapp in just 6 overs after Lizelle Lee departed for a duck in the very first over. However, Kapp and Beaumont fell in successive overs with Bryony Smith and Laura Marsh following them with low scores and in little time Surrey were reduced to 79/4 in 14.1 overs.
The captain Natalie Sciver took the responsibility of guiding her side to a respectable total by scoring an unbeaten 40 off 36 balls with 2 fours and a six. She put on a crucial 54-run stand off just 35 balls with Sophia Dunkley-Brown. Sophia was run out on the last ball of their innings but not before making a useful hand of 24 in 17 balls.
The Lancashire Thunder were moving along well in the chase with Evelyn Jones and Sarah Taylor making crucial contributions at the top in the first half of the chase. Jones scored 26 off 28 balls while Taylor scored 34 in 30 with 3 fours and a six. But their collapse started from the 12th over when they were placed at 69/2 with another 65 needed for a win.
Rene Farrell cleaned up Amy Satterthwaite for 17 in her second over and followed it with the wickets of Sarah and Eleanor Threlkeld on consecutive balls in her 3rd over. Marsh and Sciver picked up 3 wickets in a space of 8 balls to reduce Thunder to 91/8. Farrell returned for her final over to pick up the last two wickets and complete her 5-wicket haul. This five-fer is only the 2nd in the KSL so far after Anya Shrubsole’s 5/23 in 2016.
