English all-rounder Liam Dawson was clearly unhappy with the umpiring standards this season in the BPL. The ongoing season of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) has seen some close calls been taken by the umpires. Dawson seems to be least impressed with the decision making though. The Hampshire all-rounder was fined 30 percent of his match fees for showing dissent at the umpire’s decision.
Playing against the Rajshahi Kings in the 31st match of the season, Liam Dawson was named the stand-in skipper of Rangpur Riders. This was his first match as captain this season. He would be utterly disappointed the way his side lost the match by 49 runs. The Riders had managed to bend the back of the Rajshahi batting.
Having reduced the Rajshahi Kings to 43/7 in 9.2 overs, the Riders gave it away by conceding an unbeaten 85-run partnership between Farhad Reza and Mehedi Hasan. Chasing a modest 129 to win, the Rangpur Riders made a mockery of the run chase. They skittled out for a paltry 79 to lose by 49 runs. The defeat marked their second straight defeat.
In the process, skipper Liam Dawson failed to score big runs too. He perished after scoring just 2 off 9 deliveries. He was dismissed by Nazmul Islam in the 6th over. He was struck on the pads and the umpire took very little time to rule him out. A shell-shocked Dawson saw in dismay as he believed he had an inside edge to the ball. He had to walk off the field though.
The all-rounder did not shy away from showing his disappointment. He took to Twitter and showed his amusement at the poor umpiring standard in BPL this season. He tweeted, “30 percent fine for shaking my head and leaving the field to slowly…The standard of umpiring in this BPL has been shocking.”
Liam Dawson later deleted his tweet. The Rangpur Riders will hope their fortunes will change soon as the tournament is nearing it’s business end now.
