Shane Warne, the former Aussie spinner was one of the most curious cricketers during his playing days. His aim was to win games for his country by any means. Sometimes, he used to get involved in some furious sledging incidents to break the momentum of the opposition. Recently, he recalled one of the instances when he was playing against England in an ODI game.

The 50-year-old is undoubtedly one of the best spinners in the history of cricket. He bid adieu to international cricket long ago. But, still, there are some of his records that are impossible to break. He is an all-time leading wicket-taker in Tests from Australia. Moreover, he is the second player to take most five-wicket hauls in the longer format after Muttiah Muralitharan.

Shane Warne recalls an instance from an ODI against England

There is no doubt over the fact that he was a big headache for the opponents with the ball. Also, he used to continuously sledge opponents when Australia used to struggle while taking wickets in any encounter. Warne threw light over one of the instances from an ODI game against England.

The former spinner said that Australia was struggling as his skipper Steve Waugh got injured. At that time, he was the vice-captain of the team. So, all the responsibility came on his shoulders. England was in the prime position to win the game and they needed only 50 or 60 runs in last 10 overs. The only way for the hosts to win the game was to take wickets in bundles. So, Warne saved his and Glenn McGrath overs for the last.

Soon, the Aussie spinner introduced himself and McGrath in the attack. Meanwhile, Warne had already planned that he is going to start sledging to break the concentration of settled England skipper Nasser Hussain. The leg-spinner began getting into the nerves of England’s skipper saying that ‘you will get out’. And, after a couple of overs, he watched that Nasser Hussain was going for 12 runs instead of six runs in his over. However, he ended up missing a delivery and got stumped.

“I thought the only way we are going to win this game is if we take a wicket. So I’m going to bring myself and McGrath back and I’m going to start sledging Nass to see if I can upset him and then I’ll come on the other end straight away. I started getting into him saying ‘I know you’re going to stuff this up. I know you’re going to get out. Don’t let your team down this time,” Warne said as quoted by Fox Sports.

Later on, while walking towards the dugout, Nasser said that this is the last time that you are leading Australia as a skipper so make the most out of it, “So I come on to bowl, bowl the first couple and suddenly you see Nass just run down and he wanted to hit me for 12 – not six – he wanted 12. But he missed and got out. Stumped. But when I started having a go at Nass he turned to me and said: “Listen you fat p****, you’re not going to captain ever again so make the most of this one!” Warne added.

Interestingly, the Warne’s strategy worked as Australia managed to win that nail-biting encounter.
