It seems nothing is going right for India in the second Test at Lord’s. On the third day of the match, Indian captain Virat Kohli wasted a review as the visitors’ appealed for a caught and bowled dismissal. It was Ishant Sharma who caught the ball on his follow-through from the in-form Jonny Bairstow, the umpire declared it not out and the review was also turned down as the ball came back to the bowler without touching the bat.

Bairstow was batting on 55 at the time of writing this report and was briskly building on the lead against India in the first innings after Kohli’s team was shot out for a paltry 107 on Day 2. England were 209 for 5, gaining a crucial 100-run lead over the visitors. The incident happened when Bairstow looked to flick the ball off speedster Ishant Sharma.

The review

He missed the ball and it went up in the air to be grabbed by the lanky pacer in his follow through. India went up for an appeal at once thinking they have got the wicketkeeper-batsman. England were 141 for 5 at that stage and another wicket would have definitely made India hopeful about a comeback.

As Sharma appealed for Bairstow’s dismissal, umpire Marais Erasmus turned it down and Kohli then went upstairs asking for a referral. The final verdict did not contradict that of the on-field umpire and India found their review chance was wasted for nothing.

Indian bowlers tried their best earlier in the day to restrict England as cheaply as they could, reducing them to 89 for 4. But along with Bairstow, Jos Buttler (24) and Chris Woakes (42 not out when the report was submitted), who is playing in the place of under-trial Ben Stokes in this game, ensured that the hosts take a meaty lead over India in their quest for a 2-0 lead in the series.

The first day of the Test was washed out by rain but an ordinary batting performance by India saw their opponents gaining an upper edge in the game which is now virtually a four-day affair.

Shami has been the pick of the Indian bowlers on Day 3, he already has three scalps to his name, he also got the big fish English captain Joe Root for 19.
