In all the noise around the superstars of Indian cricket, the humble foot soldiers on the ground who are serving the game regularly without a minimum sign of fatigue are often missed. The lack of focus doesn’t distract them and the steel-resolve continues to do something better than the last. Odisha’s left-arm spinner Pappu Roy is one such player who considers every opportunity he gets to be his last and never falls short of giving it the best.

The 24-year-old cricketer is currently busy playing Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy T20 tournament and has done quite well by picking 12 wickets in six matches with the best of four for 21 against Assam. He backed it with a two for 21 against a strong Karnataka team in the latest match. Odisha are currently placed at No.6 in Group D with three wins and as many losses.

“I am staying in the present and not getting too far ahead of myself. Growing up, I always dreamt of playing competitive cricket, no matter what,” Roy was quoted as saying by Sportstar at the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack where Odisha are playing their Syed Mushtaq matches. “For me, every opportunity is my last and I want to make it count.”

Roy says he learnt things from Ajinkya Rahane

The cricketer first made the headline last year when he bowled against some of the country’s top batting names in Deodhar Trophy. He also shared the India ‘C’ dressing room with senior cricketers like Ajinkya Rahane and Suresh Raina. Roy’s experience of spending times with Rahane, India’s Test vice-captain, was enriching as he called him a “great player” and “humble human being”. He said how Rahane told him to take things easy while bowling.

“That helped me clear my mind because when you are playing on such a big stage, you obviously get a little nervous, but Rahane bhai was supportive throughout,” Roy, who made his domestic debut last year and has played in two first-class and 10 List ‘A’ games, said.

With family origins in Bihar and having spent some years in Kolkata, Roy went to Jajpur in Odisha to better his prospects and he made a name as a district player in this phase and eventually was picked for the Odisha side. After remaining on the sidelines of the senior state team for a while, Roy made it to the Vijay Hazare Trophy squad and even got the prized wicket of Hanuma Vihari, currently one of India’s promising Test players.

Roy ended up with 14 scalps in Vijay Hazare Trophy 2018-19 and made his Ranji Trophy debut soon.
