Former Australian pacer Mitchell Johnson congratulated India on their victory in the opening Test of the four-match series against Australia at Adelaide Oval on Monday. Led by Virat Kohli, the visitors overcame a stubborn resistance from the hosts’ tail-enders to register a 31-run win to go 1-0 up in the four-match series. The second game will be played at Perth Stadium from December 14.

India came back into the match which was an absorbing piece of a Test cricket after being reduced to 41 for 4 on the morning of Day 1 after Kohli won the toss and elected to bat. Cheteshwar Pujara, who saw his spot in the team coming under scrutiny during India’s last away series in England, rose to the occasion with a magnificent 123 as India ended up with a competitive total of 250.

It was India’s bowlers who came to the party next to successfully defend the score and restricted Australia to 235 despite a similar stiff resistance from the lower order.

India won their first Test in Australia in 10 years

Johnson, who last played for Australia in 2015, praised the fight that Australia put up till the end and hoped that the hosts recovered from the loss first and prepare themselves ahead of the second game starting in just four days’ time. The Adelaide Test win was the first one India had in Australia in a decade after their 72-run victory in Perth under the captaincy of Anil Kumble.

However, that win came at the WACA Ground, which no more hosts major international teams, while India’s next Test against Australia will be played at the new Perth Stadium where India haven’t played earlier.

Coming back to the Adelaide game, Pujara was India’s highest scorer in the second innings too with 71 as the visitors capitalised on a good opening partnership to cross 300, though their last four wickets fell for four runs. Spinner Nathan Lyon took six wickets in the innings and India set the hosts a target of 323 which they failed to reach and got all out for 291 despite its tail wagging hard and adding 104 runs for the last three wickets.
