It was not a long time back when Virat Kohli and his deputies were on the receiving end of unending curses and negative comments from the Indian fans when they were simply outplayed by Pakistan in the final of ICC Champions Trophy. But the men in blue have shown their character and have staged a good comeback. They offered some good performances in the Caribbean and now are showing their class in the neighboring country Sri Lanka.
In the three Test series, they have already confirmed their name as the winners by sealing the first two Test comprehensively. The Lankans were bullied by Kohli & Co. in their own backyard. Former Indian skipper Mohammad Azharuddin feels the team that Kohli possesses at the moment is perfectly balanced one and he demands more international success from them.
“With the confidence earned through series wins like the one in Sri Lanka, the players have been given the impetus to do well against stronger opposition. One big plus point is that there are two good medium pacers in Mohammed Shami and Umesh Yadav. The bench strength is good too. Ravindra Jadeja is the world’s top all-rounder and Ravichandran Ashwin is your No. 1 spinner. This is a very balanced team and I am keen to see more success overseas,” said the 54-year old man from Hyderabad as quoted by Mid-Day.
“The current team’s fielding is good — Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane at close-in and men like Kohli, Shikhar Dhawan and Jadeja in the outfield. In fact, it’s a tough job to face a weaker team match after match. You have to maintain your hunger and the present lot have a lot of that. This is the sign of a real professional attitude,” the owner of 22 Test hundreds further added.
The old Lankan team was much stronger than the current one
Azhar also said that the current bunch of players donning the Lions’ jersey are no match to the legends who used to represent Sri Lanka during his time.
“I am not taking away anything from this Indian team, but we faced a tougher Sri Lankan side in previous years. Of course, we beat them at home,” said Azhar.
