Former Indian cricketer Mohammad Kaif recently pitched his interest in becoming the fielding coach of the Indian senior’s cricket team. Kaif expressed his inclination towards taking the job while answering questions on the micro-blogging platform Twitter.

The Uttar Pradesh-lad was without a doubt one of India’s finest fielders ever. He was quick on his feet, attacked the ball and seldom dropped catches, no matter where he was positioned. Moreover, he effectuated acrobatic run-outs as well. He was one of the first players in the Indian team who put a lot of emphasis on fielding.

The question

Upon being asked whether he could become India’s next fielding coach, Kaif responded by saying he would love to ‘contribute in this capacity’. One of his fans tweeted with the ‘AskKaif’ hashtag saying, “@MohammedKaif Why can’t you be the fielding coach of the team? Any plans to do that? #AskKaif.”

Kaif was quick to reply to his fan by tweeting, “Would be wonderful to be able to contribute in this capacity.”

Mohammad Kaif has indeed had a stint as fielding coach. He was roped in by the Gujarat Lions franchise for the 2017 edition of the IPL and served as the fielding coach for the team. Kaif’s international career saw him play 125 ODIs and 13 Tests for India, during which he grabbed a total of 69 catches.

Currently, the Indian team’s fielding coach is R Sridhar, who is with the team in England for the ongoing ICC Champions Trophy. The team’s coaching staff comprises of Anil Kumble as the head coach and Sanjay Bangar as batting coach, both former cricketers for Team India themselves.

India will commence their CT defence against arch-rivals Pakistan on June 4. They are pooled with South Africa, Pakistan and Sri Lanka in Group B. In the previous edition of the tournament, India had lifted the Champions Trophy under MS Dhoni’s leadership by defeating England in the final.
