ODI format is the second oldest format in the game of cricket after Tests. In the history of ODIs, we have seen some great players who have brought laurels for their countries over the years. In this article, we will be discussing those five players who have scored the most runs in the history of ODIs. All these five players retired from the 50-over format between 2011 to 2015.

5. Mahela Jayawardene – 12650

Sri Lankan legend Mahela Jayawardene played 448 ODI from 1998 to 2015 and aggregated 12650 runs in them. He scored these runs at an average of 33.37 and a strike rate of 78.96. The right-hander slammed 19 centuries and 77 half-centuries in his playing career in the format with a high score of 144.

4. Sanath Jayasuriya – 13430

Another legendary batsman from Sri Lanka Sanath Jayasuriya features in the list of leading run-scorers in ODIs. He accumulated 13430 runs from 433 ODI innings played between 1989 to 2011. Jayasuriya gathered these runs at an impressive strike rate of 91.20 and an average of 32.36. He smashed 28 hundreds and 68 fifties in his ODI career with a high score of 189.

3. Ricky Ponting – 13704

Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting is the highest run-getter for his country ide with 13704 runs from 365 innings. Ponting managed a healthy average of 42.03 and a strike rate of 80.39 with a career spanning from 1995 to 2012. He was the mainstay in the Australian batting line-up for more than 15 years. Ponting smashed 30 tons and 82 fifties in the 50-over format.

2. Kumar Sangakkara – 14234

Kumar Sangakkara is the second-highest run-getter in One Day Internationals. He scored 14234 runs in 380 innings at an average of 41.98 and a strike rate of 78.86. This includes 25 centuries and 93 half-centuries with a high score of 169. Sangakkara last played an ODI in the 2015 World Cup where he slammed record four consecutive hundreds.

1. Sachin Tendulkar – 18426

Sachin Tendulkar holds the World record for scoring the most runs in ODI history. He amassed 18426 runs in 452 innings at an average of 44.83 and a strike rate of 86.23. He also holds the record for most centuries (49) and most fifties (96) in the one day format. Sachin was also the first batsman to smash a double hundred in ODIs.
