It was an emphatic win for the Men in Blue yesterday in the first of the three-match T20I series against the Proteas. The visitors continue to rein their authority over the home side ever since they won the last Test in Johannesburg following which they won the ODI series 5-1. Both the teams were back at the Bullring and it was an absolute routing display by the Indians who eased their way to victory by 28 runs to take a 1-0 lead in the series.

Records seem to tumble each time this Indian team steps on the field. MS Dhoni was once again in the limelight as he continues to stun one and all with his astute wicketkeeping skills and his glove work in the 1st T20I earned him yet another wicket-keeping record.

The 134th catch in T20 cricket

The former Indian captain pocketed a catch of South African opener Reeza Hendricks and with that his tally of T20 catches reached 134. Thus, he went past the Sri Lankan legend Kumar Sangakkara who took 133 catches in 254 matches. Dhoni is also the most successful wicketkeeper in T20Is with 77 dismissals in 87 games including 48 catches and 29 stumpings.

Another Indian, Dinesh Karthik is not too far behind the senior teammate as he is third on the list with 123 catches in 227 games. Pakistan’s Kamran Akmal (115 catches from 211 T20s) and West Indian Denesh Ramdin (108 catches off 168 T20s) are the ones to follow.

Already an ODI legend

The 36-year-old has consistently shown his class in the 50-overs format both with bat and his lightning-quick wicket-keeping. Recently he joined the elite club of wicketkeepers with more than 400 dismissals in ODI cricket along with Kumar Sangakkara (482), Adam Gilchrist (472) and Mark Boucher (424). The calm and composed head behind the wicket has been the best in business that the Men in Blue have ever had. He is also third on the list of wicketkeepers with most dismissals as he has 601 catches in international cricket only behind Boucher who grabbed 952 and Gilchrist with 813.

India are scheduled to play the second match of the ongoing T20I series at the SuperSport Park in Centurion on Wednesday, February 21. They will want to take a 2-0 lead there and thus also bag the series.
