India’s top differently-abled players will be seen in the action very soon. They will be playing the 8th All-India LIC ‘Divyang’ Inter-Zonal Cricket Championship to be held from March 30 to April 1. To spice up things, the tournament will be played in the T20 format. Teams from the North, South, West, East and Central Zones will be in the hunt for the prestigious title.
Former Indian captain Ajit Wadekar announced this tournament at a press meet. Also, Wadekar is the President of the All-India Cricket Association for the Physically Challenged. Furthermore, Wadekar also quetched that the 30-year-old association failed to get support from the BCCI despite all the efforts.
Planning to expand the specially-abled cricket further
The zonal leg of the tournament was played in New Delhi, Thrissur, Kolhapur, Godda and Bhilai. Haryana, Tamil Nadu, Mumbai, Jharkhand, and Chhattisgarh. Also, quite a few organizations came forward to support this tournament. Life Insurance Corporation of India, New India Assurance, Indian Oil, GIC, HDFC, State Bank of India, Union Bank of India and Central Bank of India are all supporting the event.
Ajit Wadekar, who was the captain of the victorious Indian team in 1971 said that he wishes to expand this cricket further. Wadekar’s team had toured the West Indies and England back then and also emerged victorious in the alien conditions. Wadekar seems to be trying to get the best out of this form of cricket. He also noted that they organized international games against Pakistan and Bangladesh earlier.
“We have held internationals against Pakistan and Bangladesh in the past. We intend to expand it further,” said the former Indian skipper. It would be a great sight to watch these cricketers compete hard against each other. Also, let us hope that this form of cricket finds more support in the future.
