New Zealand dominated India thoroughly in the fourth ODI of the five-match series at the Seddon Park in Hamilton. They were bundled out for just 92 runs after being put in to bat first thanks to a sensational spell 10-over spell from Trent Boult. He broke the back of the Indian batting line-up by picking wickets in a hurry and none of the top six batsmen looked to spend time in the middle.

Shikhar Dhawan was the first one to go who got a vicious inswinger from Boult to be rapped on the pads in front of the stumps. Rohit Sharma followed him soon while Ambati Rayudu and Dinesh Karthik failed to even open the account. Shubman Gill tried to bide his time out by playing 20-odd deliveries but playing with the straight bat led to his undoing strangely on 9.

At 40/7, things look dull for the Men in Blue but the efforts from Hardik Pandya, Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal took them to 92 in the end. Boult ended with the figures of 5/21 while Colin de Grandhomme scalped three with the comeback men Jimmy Neesham and Todd Astle picking a wicket each.

A stroll in the park

Martin Guptill and Kane Williamson couldn’t make the most of the low-pressure chase. Both of them got out to Bhuvneshwar Kumar. But Henry Nicholls who opened the innings today and Ross Taylor made sure that there were no more hiccups in the chase. Both added an unbeaten stand of 54 runs as New Zealand gunned down the small total in the 15th over itself.

Rohit Sharma’s 200th ODI turned out to be India’s worst defeat in terms of balls in the 50-over format. Trent Boult was awarded the Man of the Match for his brilliant bowling performance and finally, he was amongst the wickets after enduring a dry run in the first three matches of the series.

Man of the Match, Trent Boult said:

Nice to see the ball moving around, made the most of it. Nice to chase it down as well. It swung around nicely; pretty satisfying. To make most of it is another thing. It was good fun, nice to bowl them out cheaply. I tried to pitch it up as much as possible.

It was tough (going 0-3 down), but to pull it back is satisfying. (His plans for the evening)I’m not sure. I’ll have lunch and enjoy the win.

New Zealand skipper, Kane Williamson said:

We didn’t expect the surface to behave like this. Nice to restrict them to a 90-odd total. It stood up a little bit and nipped a bit. It spun as well. One of those days, things went well. Credit to the areas guys bowled.

We always wanted early wickets, to be able to that was a real step at the right direction. It was swinging, that was a weapon we wanted to use. Because we were able to put India under pressure, we were able to pick regular wickets. We exploited really well and chased down nicely as well.

We always play to win and today was an outstanding performance. We’ll be on a different surface at Wellington. Cricket will be different. Great to have a win today,

Against a team like India, it’s going to be a strong challenge. He (Henry Nicholls) played beautifully, it was challenging. Guptill whacked it around and other guys chipped in well. An opportunity to play against best team in the world – great opportunity to improve

India skipper, Rohit Sharma said:

One of our worst performances with the bat for a long time. Something we didn’t expect. You got to give credit to the NZ bowlers. It was a magnificent effort. Something to learn for us. At times, you need to absorb pressure (when asked about how to bat in swinging conditions).

We need to blame ourselves for it. Thing were looking good at that stage. It was about applying ourselves. Once you get in, things will start to look easier. We played some bad shots as well. It’s always challenging when the ball is swinging. Having a good run in the limited formats for a number of series.

Everyone knows what went wrong. There will be times when it swings and we need to deal with it. When you are playing for your country, you try to give your best. Good teams usually keep ticking the boxes and today we didn’t tick the right boxes.
