Pakistan captain Sarfraz Ahmed pins hope on Imran Khan as country’s captain

Imran Khan’s PTI bagged 115 of 270 seats in the National Assembly in the recently held controversial elections and would require some allies to form a government.

After his former mate Mohsin Khan, current Pakistani cricket captain Sarfraz Ahmed has also come in support of Imran Khan, the country’s only World Cup-winning captain who inched closer to become the new prime minister of Pakistan after the general elections held on July 25. Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) emerged as the single largest party in the elections.

Ahmed, who has led Pakistan to a number of wins in recent times and saw his team trouncing Zimbabwe 5-0 in their den this month, said Imran is a great leader and Pakistan will find success as a nation under him.

“Imran Khan is a great leader and it is exactly his brilliant leadership that allowed Pakistan to lift the World Cup in 1992 and I hope that, under his leadership, Pakistan can be successful,” 31-year-old Sarfraz, who has led Pakistan in 31 Tests and 90 ODIs, was cited as saying in an interview with Daily Express.

Zaheer Abbas and Mohsin Khan also back Imran

Former Pakistani great Zaheer Abbas also congratulated Khan and wished the 65-year-old leader could help improve the country’s struggling economy. Abbas said Khan had made Pakistan proud as a cricketer and was praised for his leadership skills. He expressed hope that the new PM could help Pakistan’s economy and its people to find a solution to their problems as well as the country’s cricket.

Mohsin Khan also said recently that Imran is one would not only see his country’s cricket improve but also other sports in which Pakistan once did well.

If everything falls in place, Pakistan will see a new government under Khan taking charge before its next independence day which is August 14.

The champion skipper led Pakistan in 48 Tests and 139 ODIs in the 1980s and early 1990s. While he is the most successful captain for the national team in ODIs winning 75 of them; in Tests, he is the joint second most successful with 14 wins along with Javed Miandad.
