2019 was a year in ODIs that kept the audience at the edge of their seats throughout. Teams from across the cricket globe produced some awe-inspiring action on the field of play. There wasn’t any dearth of excitement and oomph by any stretch of the imagination.

It was also a special year, since the much-awaited ODI World Cup took centre-stage in England and Wales from May 30 to the mid-July. As the year went by, a few of the teams kept stamping their authority and ruled the rankings. On the other hand, some couldn’t get a whole lot of victories and kept searching for an apt combination.

While a few teams erupted in ecstasy, garnering victories, a few of them kept sliding down the barrel. The successful teams were lauded, but the under-performers had to face a lot of criticism, on the other hand.

In the article, we rate the teams as per their ODI performances this year. Here are the ratings:-

In a year when Afghanistan dominated the T20 format, they couldn’t translate the same in ODI cricket. The Afghans played 20 ODIs in 2019 and managed only four victories, all of which came versus Ireland. Ever since May, the team has lost 12 matches in a row, including nine in the World Cup.

During the mega event, they gave India and Pakistan a run for their money, but couldn’t win. The 3-0 series whitewash at the hands of West Indies summed up their miseries in 2019. Afghanistan have also faced turmoil in their team management.

Sri Lanka made a disastrous start to 2019, losing their first eight ODIs. It included a 5-0 drubbing to South Africa. In May 21, Dimuth Karunaratne and Co defeated Scotland by 35 runs in Edinburgh to open their account.

In the World Cup, the Islanders mustered their biggest win of the year, rolling over England by 20 runs at the Headingley. Apart from that, Lanka beat the Afghans and West Indies. Later in July, the Lankans thumped Bangladesh by 3-0 at home. Earlier this year, they lost an ODI series versus Pakistan 2-0 in Karachi to cap off the year.

The defeats were understandable since Lanka didn’t have a number of their key players, who backed off due to security concerns in Pakistan. Overall, the Asian side took part in 21 ODIs in 2019, winning seven of them while losing 14.

West Indies drew their home ODI series against England 2-2 with some high-scoring games taking place. But as 2019 progressed, the Caribbean team couldn’t show enough consistency. In the tri-series in Ireland in May, Bangladesh beat them in three ODIs, including the one in the Final.

Jason Holder’s men began the World Cup, bowling Pakistan out for 105 and winning with 218 balls left. However, they lost momentum and finished ninth in the points table. West Indies lost six matches in a row during the mega event and got a consolation win versus the Afghans.

South Africa made a grand start to 2019. Faf du Plessis’ men defeated Pakistan and Sri Lanka in bilateral series, winning eight out of 10 games. Just when the Proteas were being expected to make hay in the World Cup, things went pear-shaped.

South Africa lost to England, India and Bangladesh to start their journey. It was a nine-wicket win over the Afghans that kick-started their campaign. But New Zealand and Pakistan slapped them with defeats and knocked them out of the tournament.

The Proteas ended their campaign, beating Sri Lanka and Australia, but it was nothing, but mitigation of the damage. It was a year when the Proteas dominated the Asian teams. All in all, out of 19 matches, South Africa won 11 matches, losing seven with one match producing no result.

New Zealand made a topsy-turvy start to their ODI journey in 2019. Even as Kane Williamson and Co clean swept Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, India beat them 4-1 in the five-match series. In 11 home games, the Kiwis won seven while losing four.

The Black Caps started the World Cup, decimating Sri Lanka by 10 wickets in Cardiff after which they defeated Bangladesh, Afghanistan, New Zealand and West Indies. But the Kiwis experienced a bit of a slump after losing to Pakistan, Australia and England.

However, owing to their good start earlier, the Black Caps went to the semis, edging out Pakistan on net run rate. In the semi-final against India, New Zealand won by 18 runs and then narrowly missed out on winning the Final at the iconic Lord’s. Overall, the Kiwis won 13 out of 21 matches, losing seven.

From there on, the Three Lions won seven matches in succession. It was Sarfaraz Ahmed’s Pakistan, who broke their losing streak and it came in the World Cup.
The Brits went down by 18 runs at the Trent Bridge in Nottingham. But England beat Bangladesh, Afghanistan and West Indies to get back momentum. They lost to Sri Lanka and Australia, but the defeats didn’t stop them from qualifying for the semis.
Then, Eoin Morgan and Co beat the Aussies to make the Final. After some jaw-dropping moments, the Brits won the championship for the maiden time. All in all, England won 14 out of 22 ODIs in 2019, losing only five.

2019 was a year in ODIs that kept the audience at the edge of their seats throughout. Teams from across the cricket globe produced some awe-inspiring action on the field of play. There wasn’t any dearth of excitement and oomph by any stretch of the imagination.
It was also a special year, since the much-awaited ODI World Cup took centre-stage in England and Wales from May 30 to the mid-July. As the year went by, a few of the teams kept stamping their authority and ruled the rankings. On the other hand, some couldn’t get a whole lot of victories and kept searching for an apt combination.
While a few teams erupted in ecstasy, garnering victories, a few of them kept sliding down the barrel. The successful teams were lauded, but the under-performers had to face a lot of criticism, on the other hand.

<h3>Afghanistan- 1.5/10</h3>

In a year when Afghanistan dominated the T20 format, they couldn’t translate the same in ODI cricket. The Afghans played 20 ODIs in 2019 and managed only four victories, all of which came versus Ireland. Ever since May, the team has lost 12 matches in a row, including nine in the World Cup.
During the mega event, they gave India and Pakistan a run for their money, but couldn’t win. The 3-0 series whitewash at the hands of West Indies summed up their miseries in 2019. Afghanistan have also faced turmoil in their team management.
<a href="https://www.crictracker.com/asghar-afghan-reappointed-as-afghanistan-captain-in-all-three-formats/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Asghar Afghan</a> started the year as the skipper before Gulbadin Naib was appointed as captain for the World Cup. After Naib failed, Rashid Khan was given the mantle. In December, Afghan re-donned the leader’s hat, to everyone’s surprise.

<h3>Sri Lanka- 3/10</h3>

Sri Lanka made a disastrous start to 2019, losing their first eight ODIs. It included a 5-0 drubbing to South Africa. In May 21, Dimuth Karunaratne and Co defeated Scotland by 35 runs in Edinburgh to open their account.
In the World Cup, the Islanders mustered their biggest win of the year, rolling over England by 20 runs at the Headingley. Apart from that, Lanka beat the Afghans and West Indies. Later in July, the Lankans thumped Bangladesh by 3-0 at home. Earlier this year, they lost an ODI series versus Pakistan 2-0 in Karachi to cap off the year.
The defeats were understandable since Lanka didn’t have a number of their key players, who backed off due to security concerns in Pakistan. Overall, the Asian side took part in 21 ODIs in 2019, winning seven of them while losing 14.

<h3>Pakistan- 3.5/10</h3>

Pakistan started 2019 in a spirited manner, losing the decider against South Africa after levelling the series 2-2. But Sarfaraz Ahmed’s men had something scary in store. They lost 10 matches in succession, including losses in bilateral series against Australia and England.
Pakistan ceased their losing streak versus the Brits itself, defeating them by 14 runs at the Trent Bridge in Nottingham. But the defeat in the World Cup at the hands of India in Manchester gave rise to an uproar and the Pakistan players also had to face abuses.
The Men in Green won their last four matches in the World Cup, but New Zealand edged them out on net run rate in the race to the semis. Pakistan capped off the year with two thumping wins. Overall, Pakistan won nine out of 25 ODIs in 2019, losing as many as 15 games.

<h3>West Indies- 4/10</h3>

West Indies drew their home ODI series against England 2-2 with some high-scoring games taking place. But as 2019 progressed, the Caribbean team couldn’t show enough consistency. In the tri-series in Ireland in May, Bangladesh beat them in three ODIs, including the one in the Final.
Jason Holder’s men began the World Cup, bowling Pakistan out for 105 and winning with 218 balls left. However, they lost momentum and finished ninth in the points table. West Indies lost six matches in a row during the mega event and got a consolation win versus the Afghans.
The Caribbeans’ only series win came in the form of a 3-0 sweep against Afghanistan. Apart from that, the West Indies lost four out of five ODIs versus Indies. Meanwhile, Kieron Pollard replaced Holder as the skipper.

<h3>Bangladesh- 5/10</h3>

Bangladesh slumped to a 3-0 whitewash to New Zealand, making a poor start to 2019. But they remained unbeaten in the Ireland tri-series, winning five matches. It was the first time the Tigers won a multi-team international tournament.
Then they started the World Cup, rolling over South Africa by 21 runs. In their next game, Bangladesh almost took down the Kiwis, losing by two wickets. Mashrafe Mortaza and Co chased down 322 against the West Indies in Taunton to emerge as a force. Their campaign went haywire from there on.
Despite all-round efforts from Shakib Al Hasan, Bangladesh failed to reach the semis. In July, Tamim Iqbal led the national team in an ODI series in Sri Lanka that the Tigers lost 3-0. Overall Bangladesh won seven out of 18 ODIs, losing 11 of them.

<h3>South Africa- 5.5/10</h3>

South Africa made a grand start to 2019. Faf du Plessis’ men defeated Pakistan and Sri Lanka in bilateral series, winning eight out of 10 games. Just when the Proteas were being expected to make hay in the World Cup, things went pear-shaped.
South Africa lost to England, India and Bangladesh to start their journey. It was a nine-wicket win over the Afghans that kick-started their campaign. But New Zealand and Pakistan slapped them with defeats and knocked them out of the tournament.
The Proteas ended their campaign, beating Sri Lanka and Australia, but it was nothing, but mitigation of the damage. It was a year when the Proteas dominated the Asian teams. All in all, out of 19 matches, South Africa won 11 matches, losing seven with one match producing no result.

<h3>New Zealand- 7/10</h3>

New Zealand made a topsy-turvy start to their ODI journey in 2019. Even as Kane Williamson and Co clean swept Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, India beat them 4-1 in the five-match series. In 11 home games, the Kiwis won seven while losing four.
The Black Caps started the World Cup, decimating Sri Lanka by 10 wickets in Cardiff after which they defeated Bangladesh, Afghanistan, New Zealand and West Indies. But the Kiwis experienced a bit of a slump after losing to Pakistan, Australia and England.
However, owing to their good start earlier, the Black Caps went to the semis, edging out Pakistan on net run rate. In the semi-final against India, New Zealand won by 18 runs and then narrowly missed out on winning the Final at the iconic Lord’s. Overall, the Kiwis won 13 out of 21 matches, losing seven.

<h3>Australia- 8.5/10</h3>

After a horrendous 2018, Australia well and truly made amends in 2019. The start wasn’t a great one as India beat them 2-1. Then on Indian soil, the Aussies went down 0-2. But <a href="https://www.facebook.com/crictracker/photos/a.601832999847425/3174324995931533/?type=3&amp;theater" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Aaron Finch’s</a> men won came back to win the series 3-2, emerging triumphant in Ranchi, Mohali and Delhi.
Australia didn’t look back and defeated Pakistan 5-0 in the UAE. The Aussies surged ahead in the World Cup as well. In fact, from March 8 to June 29, Australia won 15 out of their 16 matches, showing absolute dominance. Only India could beat them by 36 runs at the Kennington Oval.
Finch’s men didn’t have a happy ending to the World Cup though. England beat them by eight wickets in the semis at the Edgbaston in Birmingham to knock them out. Overall, the Aussies won 16 out of 23 ODIs in 2019.

<h3>India- 9/10</h3>

India made a great start to 2019, winning their away ODI series versus Australia. But back at home, the Men in Blue lost to the same opposition after taking a 2-0 lead in a five-match series. However, Virat Kohli and Co comfortably rolled over New Zealand 4-1 in another away ODI series.
Kohli’s men came out firing on all cylinders in the World Cup, topping the points table after the league stage. Kohli and Co lost only a solitary game to England in Birmingham, the least among the participating teams.
But things fell apart in the semis, as they failed to chase down 240 at the Old Trafford in Manchester. India ended the year on a happy note, beating West Indies in four out of the five matches. All in all, the Men in Blue played 28 ODIs in 2019 out of which they won 19, losing eight.
