Ravi Shastri is the highest paid coach in the cricket fraternity followed by Australia’s Darren Lehmann and England’s Trevor Bayliss. Team India’s head coach Shastri draws $1.17 million per year.

It is not surprising that an Indian coach is paid much more because BCCI being the wealthiest board among all is also no secret. However, the margin of difference between the other two coaches, Lehmann and Bayliss, is quite a lot.

According to Cricinfo’s Cricket Monthly, Lehmann earns $0.55 million and Bayliss earns $0.52 million. In fact, the current Indian coach earns less only than what the top players from Australia, England and India take home annually.

As per the report, another interesting observation is that South Asian teams pay their coaches more than their top players. Perhaps, the fact that most of the coaches are foreigners and not locals, their value increases. It is also relatively difficult to coach subcontinental teams and the job also comes with high risk, as far as job security is concerned. In fact, it may be because of these reasons and the basic language difference problems that India prefer coaches from India itself.

Bangladesn Cricket Board pays Chandika Hathurasingha five times the basic salary of their top player. Similarly, Mickey Arthur is paid three times more than the top category Pakistan player. Contrastingly, in Australia and England, coaches are paid relatively less than top player’s basic salary.

The report has also revealed the highest paid cricket captains. Here, Steve Smith with his $1.46 million supersedes Virat Kohli’s $1 million. Smith earns 20 times more than what his counterpart, Zimbabwe skipper Graeme Cremer earns. However, with Virat Kohli’s earnings from the BCCI, brand endorsements and IPL, he is the richest cricketer in the world, at the moment.
