Ravichandran Ashwin has been one of India’s stalwarts in international cricket, especially in Test cricket. However, apart from his dominance in the longest format of the game, the tweaker has struggled to churn out consistent performances in limited-overs cricket and subsequently went out of contention in white-ball cricket.

The off-spinner lost his place to the likes of the wrist-spin duo of Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav. However, the Tamil Nadu spinner feels that most finger spinners are currently struggling to find their feet in one-day and T20 cricket. He spoke to the media regarding his views and perceptions surrounding the art.

‘Perception of finger spinners’- Ashwin

“The future of finger-spinners lies in the perception of people. More so because it’s based on perception of what people think of what’s relevant and what’s not. Things will turn around. At one point of time, leg-spinners didn’t have a place (in limited-overs cricket), now they do. Finger-spinners, maybe you all think don’t have a role, will come back too,” Ashwin was quoted as saying by Times of India.

He also highlighted the significance of providing finger-spinners with the same opportunity as that of the leg-spinners. “People have been allowing 64 runs for two wickets in 10 overs of leg-spin too. If you give the same courage to the finger-spinners, they’ll do the same thing. It’s all about perception. I think handling bowlers is all about how you handle them and how you perceive them.” the 31-year-old added.

Ashwin hasn’t been a part of the Indian limited-overs team since the tour of Sri Lanka in 2017. However, he has much to look forward to as he has recently been appointed as the skipper of the Kings XI Punjab for the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League. Punjab haven’t won a single IPL title and would be looking to turn things around with Ashwin at the helm.
