Mohammed Shami unlikely to play T20 World Cup 2024 in the USA and the Caribbean

Indian cricket supporters were sobered by the revelation of Mohammed Shami, the seasoned fast bowler, who recently went through surgery for his left Achilles tendon. This development casts a shadow over his participation in the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup, slated to commence in June. Shami's absence could potentially pose significant challenges for Team India, given his pivotal role as a key player in the setup.

33-year-old Shami has been a stalwart in the Indian cricket configuration, contributing significantly to the team's success across formats. His last appearance for India was back in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 final against Australia in November. Despite battling through discomfort during the tournament, Shami's performance remained commendable, emerging as the leading wicket-taker of the tournament.

Mohammed Shami confirms successful surgery 

Shami was in London for his surgery and took to X to share the news of his surgery.Shami expressed positivity about his rehabilitation journey but acknowledged the extended timeframe needed to attain peak fitness.

"Just had a successful heel operation on my Achilles tendon! 👟 Recovery is going to take some time, but looking forward to getting back on my feet. #AchillesRecovery #HeelSurgery #RoadToRecovery," the post read.

His absence from the upcoming T20 World Cup will impact India's bowling department, and would definitely deprive the team of his invaluable experience and skill set.

Despite efforts, including specialised ankle injections, the need for surgery suggests a setback in his rehabilitation process. The scrutiny of the National Cricket Academy's role in overseeing Shami's recovery underscores the importance of robust injury management protocols for professional athletes.

The fast bowler was awarded the Arjuna Award for his contribution to the sport on January 9, 2024. He has picked 229 Test, 195 ODI, and 24 T20I wickets in his career which has spanned more than a decade.
