Rajasthan Royals kept their hopes of reaching the playoffs in IPL 2023 alive as they beat Punjab Kings by four wickets on Friday, May 19 at Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium, Dharamsala. With their win, RR maintain their fifth position on the points table, having 14 points with seven wins from 14 games. RR’s fate now lie in the hands of Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore as a loss for both teams in their last game will seal the spot in the playoffs for the Sanju Samson-led side.

Following RR’s win against PBKS, captain Sanju Samson shared a photo with Yuzvendra Chahal and Jos Buttler where the trio could be seen having a chat sitting on the outfield with some water bottles kept in front of them. Samson captioned the photo, “Yuziii, Josetta..korch neram irunnu nokam Chelapo Biriyani kittiyalo ?🧐😂🤣” referring to Salim Kumar's hit dialogue from the Malayalam movie One Man Show. It translates to “Let’s sit for sometime, maybe we might get Biryani,”

The post got a hilarious comment from Buttler who wrote, “No Biryani… duck pancakes!”. He got a reply from Chahal who wrote, “head shot 😂”. Notably, Buttler has scored a record five ducks in IPL 2023.

Coming back to the game, both teams came into the fixture with their backs against the wall as both desperately needed a win to stay alive in the playoffs race. After being put into bat first, Punjab were in disarray at 50/4 after 6.3 overs. Seeing their team in trouble, Sam Curran (49* off 31), Jitesh Sharma (44 off 28), and Shahrukh Khan (41* off 23) played responsible knocks to help their side reach 187/5 in the first innings. Navdeep Saini shone with the ball for RR with figures of 3/40 in four overs.

In reply, Rajasthan lost Jos Buttler for a duck but a 73-run stand between Devdutt Padikkal (51 off 30) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (50 off 36) for the second wicket helped Rajasthan stabilize their innings. Padikkal departed after scoring a brilliant fifty while captain Samson departed cheaply, scoring just 2 off 3 balls.

After two quick blows, Shimron Hetmyer (46 off 28) and Jaiswal added 47 runs for the fourth wicket. Following Jaiswal’s dismissal in the 15th over, Hetmyer and Riyan Parag (20 off 12) added 32 runs for the fifth wicket. The situation got tense at the end as RR required nine from the last over. Dhruv Jurel (10* off 4)  rose to the occasion and helped his side chase down the target in 19.4 overs to keep them alive in the competition.
