In the upcoming 27th match of the ongoing ODI World Cup, Australia are scheduled to face New Zealand. Before the match, during a press conference, Australia's captain, Pat Cummins, responded to a question from an Australian reporter about England's defeat with a chuckle, followed by a burst of laughter. Before this, he had referred to the New Zealand players as their "good mates" whom they would face on Saturday in Dharamsala.
The reporter in a video shared by the ICC asked Cummins, "You mentioned good friends in other teams. It must have been heartbreaking to see England suffer last night?"
The defending champions of the 50-over World Cup, England, have been experiencing a disappointing run in the ongoing ODI World Cup 2023. Yesterday, they were comprehensively defeated by Sri Lanka by eight wickets.
Pat Cummins was asked about England's recent loss to Sri Lanka. The reporter mentioned close friends in other teams and asked how Cummins felt about England's defeat. Cummins responded with a smile, expressing his mixed emotions.
“You mentioned close friends in other teams. I imagine you would have been heartbroken to see England suffer defeat. What was your reaction to that?” asked one of the reporters at the press conference.
He acknowledged that Australia would be facing England in a couple of games and stated that he would closely observe their performance. While he admitted feeling sad about England's loss, he didn't have much more to add.
“Um, Yeah. Obviously, we’ve got them in a couple of games time, so we’ll have a close look there. Yeah, it’s sad to see (he smiles). Don’t have much more,” Cummins said.
As the World Cup progresses, Australia have been making a comeback after initial setbacks. They suffered losses against India and South Africa but have since bounced back with victories against Sri Lanka, Pakistan, and the Netherlands. Currently, they hold the fourth spot in the standings with six points.
In their recent game against the Netherlands, the Australian team achieved impressive milestones. They secured the biggest-ever World Cup win, triumphing by a massive margin of 390 runs. Glenn Maxwell, the star all-rounder, stole the show by hitting the fastest century in the history of the ODI World Cup. He reached his hundred in just 40 balls, smashing nine boundaries and eight huge sixes.
Opening batter, David Warner also showcased his skill with an exceptional century, while experienced players Steven Smith and Marnus Labuschagne both scored quick half-centuries. The Australian bowling unit also displayed excellent form, with Adam Zampa leading the way. Zampa has taken three consecutive four-wicket hauls in the last three matches, demonstrating his exceptional bowling abilities.
Captain Pat Cummins has also played a crucial role with the ball, taking important wickets during the middle overs. On the other hand, New Zealand have been performing exceptionally well, winning four out of five matches. However, they recently faced a setback against India, losing by four wickets. As the tournament goes ahead, all eyes will be on these two teams as they strive to secure their place in the semifinal.
