Though cricket is currently under the limelight due to the multiple Test matches happening this month, the one sport that has kept everyone hooked in the cricketing fraternity is football, due to the ongoing FIFA World Cup. While Portugal’s exit was disheartening for all the Cristiano Ronaldo fans, Argentina making it to the finals was a piece of great news for all the Lionel Messi fans.
The sporting fraternity is gearing up for the FIFA World Cup finals between Argentina and France scheduled to take place on Sunday, December 18. And amid all the excitement, former India skipper and a legend of the game, Sachin Tendulkar shared his thoughts on the upcoming clash.
Tendulkar shared CricTracker’s tweet which spotted similarities between his and Messi’s career and tweeted:
“2011 India Cricket World Cup Champions. 2022? What do you think guys? #FIFAWorldCup”

Sachin and Messi share the same jersey number, 10. Messi lost the World Cup finals eight years ago against Germany. While Tendulkar won Player of the Match in the 2011 World Cup semi-finals against Pakistan, Messi won the Player of the Match award in Argentina’s semi-final clash against Croatia on December 13, 2022. Tendulkar eventually won the 2011 World Cup, and with the similarities pointed out, the Indian legend’s question hinted at Messi lifting the FIFA World Cup with Argentina.
Messi has already indicated that the ongoing FIFA World Cup will be his last, and thus the finals against France will be his last appearance at the quadrennial event. At the next edition of the tournament in 2026, Messi will be nearing his 40s. Thus, he had to take a bold decision. In such a case, all the Lionel Messi fans would be hoping for Argentina to lift the cup, so as to give the legendary football player a remarkable farewell.
