T20 World Cup: New York stadium construction in full swing for marquee IND-PAK clash

With just month a month to go for the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024, construction is in full swing on the massive new Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York. The state-of-the-art 34,000-seat venue will host seven marquee matches during the tournament, including the highly-anticipated clash between arch-rivals India and Pakistan on 09th June.

The need for a world-class cricket ground in the United States became evident when the ICC announced that the 2024 T20 World Cup would be hosted by the West Indies and the USA in late 2019. With a large South Asian population across the New York metro area passionate about cricket, officials identified Nassau County as the ideal location for a grand new playing facility.

The cutting-edge modular stadium design will allow for rapid construction timelines. In just the last month, significant progress has been made according to an ICC time-lapse video. The towering East Stand framework to accommodate 12,500 fans is already taking shape, with cranes lifting the modular components into place.

“It is extremely exciting to see the progress made in the construction of the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York over the past month. Work on the outfield commenced in January and in the past few weeks the East Stand framework has started to take shape,” Chris Tetley, the ICC Head of Events, said.

In addition to the main stadium bowl, work is also underway on the outfield itself as well as the north and south premium hospitality and media pavilions that will host broadcasters, sponsors, and VIPs. The match between South Africa and Sri Lanka on 03 June will be the first official fixture here. Interestingly, the Men in Blue will play three out of their four league games at the venue.
