India broke their streak of not winning against South Africa in Durban with a comfortable 6-wicket win thanks to a brilliant century from Virat Kohli, who was well supported by Ajinkya Rahane. It was wrist spinners who sparkled with the ball to keep the hosts down to 269/8. Faf du Plessis’s century made the difference for his side who lost five wickets for only 134 runs but ended with a decent total on the board. After a steady start from the openers, Kohli and Rahane took India home easily.

All the stats and numbers that were recorded during India’s historic win against South Africa:

1 – This is India’s first ever win against South Africa at the Durban’s Kingsmead out of eight ODI matches. Durban was the only venue where India failed to defeat the home side even after five tries before this match.


1 – India’s top four scoring 20 and more runs is the first instance of India’s top four passing 20 in an ODI inning on the South African soil.


2 – Only the 2nd time in the last eight ODI series between India and South Africa where India won the first match of the series. India took 1-0 lead in the 3-match series at home in 2010.


4 – This ODI is only the 4th in the history of the format where captains of both teams scored centuries. All the four have come in the last five years with the last three including a hundred from Kohli.


5 – Ajinkya Rahane’s fifty in this game is his 5th consecutive in ODI format. He became the 4th Indian to score five 50+ in a row after Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and Virat Kohli. Dravid’s five fifty-plus scores include one while playing for Asia XI.


5 – Indian spinners took five spinners in this game which are the joint most by spinners in an ODI inning at Durban. This is the 4th instance of spinners taking five wickets in an ODI inning at Durban and the first in over ten years.


9 – Number of different countries where Virat Kohli has scored a hundred in the ODI format. He is the 10th player to score an ODI hundred in nine different countries and the 3rd player after Sachin Tendulkar and Sanath Jayasuriya to score in nine Test playing nations.


11 – Number of centuries in ODI format for Virat Kohli in 41 innings. These are the joint most ODI hundreds as an Indian captain along with Sourav Ganguly (143 innings). Only Ricky Ponting (22) and AB de Villiers (13) scored more ODI tons as a skipper than Kohli.


18 – India’s win brought an end to South Africa’s 17 consecutive ODI wins at home. No other team won more than 12 ODI matches in a row at home.


189 – Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane’s 189-run stand is India’s biggest partnership for the 3rd wicket against South Africa in ODIs. This is also India’s 2nd biggest partnership for any wicket against South Africa in South Africa behind the 193-run opening stand of Tendulkar and Ganguly in the 2001 Johannesburg ODI.

Overall, Kohli-Rahane’s stand is the 3rd biggest for India against South Africa in ODIs with Tendulkar and Dinesh Karthik’s 194-run stand for the 2nd wicket in the 20101 Gwalior ODI topping the list.
