Dawid Malan’s long awaited debut came against South Africa at Cardiff in the final T20I of the 3-match series as he was brought in for Jonny Bairstow. Malan, who has been playing in the domestic circuit for over 11 years, has featured in over 100 matches in all the three formats in his professional career before playing his first game at the International level.
He made his debut a memorable one by scoring a fifty and became the first England player to score a fifty in his maiden T20I. Malan, who came to the crease after Jason Roy’s wicket in the 2nd over, got off the mark with a six on the 2nd ball he faced. Thus he became the first England player to score his first runs in International cricket with a six.
He brought up his fifty in 31 balls and was later dismissed by Imran Tahir after scoring 78 off just 44 balls with 12 fours and 2 sixes. The previous highest individual score by an England player on T20I debut was 46 by Paul Collingwood against Australia in 2005.
Overall, Malan’s 78 is the joint 4th highest individual score for any player on their T20I debut. The highest is by former Australian captain Ricky Ponting’s unbeaten 98 against New Zealand in 2005; the first ever T20I match in the history played at the Auckland.
David Warner’s 89 against South Africa at the MCG in 2009 is the 2nd highest individual score for a player in T20I format. Warner also was making his International debut in that game like Malan.
