Stats: Most centuries in ODI cricket while chasing 300+ totals

In his first ODI of 2018 at home, Virat Kohli came out all guns blazing from the moment he arrived at the crease scoring runs at a quick pace. The Indian skipper was assisted by his deputy Rohit Sharma who anchored the innings before taking off in the later part of the chase. Though Rohit top scored and remained unbeaten on 152, the 140-run knock from Kohli played a huge role in steering the game home. This inning was a prime example of Kohli’s dominance in chases especially while chasing 300+.

Since his ODI debut, Team India has successfully chased down totals of 300+ on nine occasions and he has scored a century on seven instances. Kohli has scored 36 centuries in the ODI format thus far and eight of them have come in 300+ chases. He holds the record for scoring most tons in 300+ ODI chases with Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakkara being the second best, who scored four centuries in these chases.

Rohit isn’t too far behind in this list as he shares the third spot with as many as six others. The Indian opener now has scored three tons in 300+ chases. All these three tons turned out to be scores in excess of 140 including two 150+ efforts. Among Indian players, Rohit is only behind Kohli on this particular list. It includes two players from South Africa – Hashim Amla and AB de Villiers who also find themselves in most of the top ODI batting lists.

Jason Roy has scored as many as three in only 11 times he batted in such occasions. His figures in the 300+ chases are one of the reflections in the change of approach by England towards limited-overs cricket. Younis Khan is one surprise entry in this list given the Pakistan batsman scored only seven hundred in his 265-match ODI career that came to an end in 2015.
