Rohit Sharma stepped-up on being handed the captaincy responsibility with consistent scores throughout the Asia Cup 2018 guiding India towards the title. While his captaincy was well acclaimed, the opening batsman made it count with the bat as well. Rohit scored only 23 in the opening game against Hong Kong but bounced back with a quick-fire fifty against India. He followed that with unbeaten knocks against Bangladesh and Pakistan to power the team into the final.

Despite a couple of early wickets, Rohit looked steady in the chase with three fours and three sixes in the final. However, he ended up finding the fielder at deep square-leg attempting to play his favourite pull shot on 48. Thus, he missed out a chance on becoming only the third player after Tamim Iqbal and Virat Kohli to score four consecutive fifties in the Asia Cup. Rohit would have become the first player with four consecutive fifties in the Asia Cup as a captain as well.

Rohit ended the Asia Cup with an aggregate of 317 which is the second most runs by any captain in a single edition. MS Dhoni scored as many as 327 runs during the 2008 edition that Sri Lanka won. Except for Dhoni and Rohit, no other captain scored 300 runs in a single edition of the Asia Cup. Sri Lanka’s Arjuna Ranatunga scored 272 runs in the 1997 edition of the tournament including a hat-trick of fifties. Shahid Afridi scored 265 runs in only three games in 2010 but failed to take his team into the final.

Rohit was sensational with his six hitting throughout the tournament as he hit as many as 13 in the six matches. He failed to hit a single maximum in the game against Hong Kong but hit a minimum of three in every game since then. His 13 sixes are the second most in a single edition of the Asia Cup behind Sanath Jayasuriya’s 14 in 2008. Five players have hit more than ten sixes in a single Asia Cup but only Rohit and Afridi (12 in 2010) have done it as captain.
