Senior England pacer and former ODI and T20I captain, Stuart Broad marked his comeback in style in the 2nd Test against West Indies after being left out of the first Test in the ongoing #RaiseTheBat series. He looked in fine rhythm as he bowled well on his return to the squad against the Windies in Manchester.

The pacer grabbed his opportunity in the playing XI with both the hands after his bowling partner James Anderson and Mark Wood were rested while Jofra Archer was left out of the game for breaking COVID-19 protocols. The veteran made a notable performance on his return with a superb spell against West Indies in their first innings of the in-progress second Test at Old Trafford in Manchester.

Broad didn’t dishearten on his return and his timely rampage shows there’s a fight in the old dog yet. He looked very eager to make an impact as he picked three wickets in West Indies’ first innings. He drew the first blood in the form of Shamarh Brooks, who was ambushed leg before after playing a scintillating knock of 67 runs. In his next eleven deliveries, Broad then followed it up with two more wickets by sending away Jermaine Blackwood and Shane Dowrich.

Stuart Broad finished with figures of 3/66 in his 23 overs

Broad bowled a peach of a delivery to clean up Blackwood, who had scored a match-winning knock of 95 runs and was the hero for West Indies in the 2nd innings of the first Test in Southampton. The veteran pacers’ delivery nibbled back in and infringed Blackwood’s defence to wreck his stumps.

The right-hander was sent packing for a duck before Broad also got Dowrich out on a duck in his next over. At a time when he has nothing left to prove, he is still determined to fight for his place. Broad finished with figures of 3/66 in his 23 overs as he combined with Chris Woakes and Sam Curran who picked up five wickets between them to bowl out West Indies for 287.

After scoring 37 runs with a loss of two wickets, England extended their lead to 219 runs at the end of Day 4. Holding a slight edge over the visitors, the English batsmen will be looking to add at least 30-40 more runs to their lead before declaring their innings and ask West Indies to bat in their second innings to give themselves a chance of winning the Test match on the final day.
