Looking at the dismal state of Sri Lankan cricket in the current series against India, former Indian captain and renowned cricket commentator/analyst, Sunil Gavaskar took a jibe at the Lankans claiming that an elite Ranji team can defeat an International Test side such as Sri Lanka in its present state.

The Royal Stag Mega Cricket Cup has been one sided as of now with India winning the first two Test matches convincingly. India defeated Lanka in the Galle Test by a massive margin of 304 runs. Following the comprehensive defeat in the first Test, Sri Lanka lost the second Test match, after being asked to follow-on, by an innings and 53 runs.

In the ongoing Third Test at Pallekele, Sri Lanka yet again is staring at an innings defeat after being bundled out of 135 runs in 37 overs, in reply to India’s 487. Pandya and Dhawan toyed with the Lankan bowlers to bring up their respective centuries in the match. In the first two matches of series, India posted totals over 600 runs to make a case of collective failure of the host- with both bat and ball.

“To be frank, you can’t call this a Test match. The Indian team hasn’t been tested at all. A Ranji team in the elite status can beat this Sri Lankan side,” claimed Sunil Gavaskar during the match review show being broadcasted on Sony. Even Sanjay Manjrekar and Aakash Sharma, renowned cricket analyst, took to Twitter to take a jibe at the standard of cricket currently in Sri Lanka.

Earlier, Mohammad Kaif as well termed the matches in Sri Lanka as mismatches. Sanjay Manjrekar also urged Virat Kohli to request the Board for tougher challenges, rather than playing with inferior opponents, citing the example of Imran Khan during his playing days.
