Back in 1999, Indian cricket was hit by the scandal of match-fixing as some of their key players in Mohammed Azharuddin, Manoj Prabhakar, Ajay Jadeja and a couple more were alleged to have fixed a match slapped with suspensions. It was easily the darkest phase of Indian cricket. Even the likes of Sachin Tendulkar denied captaining the team. That’s when Sourav Ganguly took charge to resurrect their reputation.

In 2001, Australia toured India for a Test and ODI series. During that time Steve Waugh and Co were on a rampage having won 16 Test matches in a row. India lost the opening match in Mumbai and were on a verge of defeat in Kolkata. However, some brilliant individual performances from the likes of Harbhajan Singh, VVS Laxman and Rahul Dravid helped India steal a win after being forced to follow-on.

Dada’s glorious career

Their cricket embarked on a new journey thereafter as the ‘Prince of Kolkata’ infused confidence and zeal into its players to take their opponents head-on. He was the leader of the pack in the 2001 Champions Trophy, which was shared between the Men in Blue and Sri Lanka. In 2003, he shouldered his team to the final of the Cricket World Cup in the African continent.

In a glorious career, Ganguly plied his trade in 311 ODIs and 113 Tests in which he managed 11,363 and 7212 runs respectively. He made his last international appearance in a Test match versus the Aussies in Nagpur back in 2008. The cricketer has turned 46 today and wishes have poured in on social media.

Meanwhile, Suresh Raina, the left-hander, wished Dada on the auspicious occasion. He took to Twitter and wrote, “Wish you a very happy birthday dada @SGanguly99, may god bless you with all the success & happiness! #HappyBirthdayDada”
