Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy: Shreyas Iyer named Mumbai’s captain for the tournament

Mumbai is slated to take on Karnataka in their first game of the super league at the Holkar stadium.

Mumbai suffered a big blow when their captain Ajinkya Rahane was ruled out of the Super League stage of the ongoing Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2019 on basis of reportedly being unfit. He had led the team during the league stages of the domestic T20 tournament.

However, a source in Mumbai Cricket Association confirmed that Rahane was left out of the Super League stage due to him being unavailable for this part of the tournament and ruled out the reports of him carrying a niggle or being unfit. Mumbai and Railways were the two teams that qualified from Group C. Mumbai played all its league matches in Indore.

New captain named and squad declared

In absence of Ajinkya Rahane, the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) have decided to name Shreyas Iyer as the captain of the team in the Super League stage of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, which begins in Indore on Friday. Mumbai are slated to take on Karnataka in their first game of the super league at the Holkar stadium. Apart from Iyer, youngsters like Prithvi Shaw, Siddesh Lad, and Jay Bista have been included in the 15-member squad.

As for the experience, former skippers Aditya Tare and Suryakumar Yadav will be present to guide the young guns of the team. The bowling attack sees the experience of Dhawal Kulkarni and he’ll be assisted by the likes of Shardul Thakur, Tushar Deshpande, Royston Dias, and Akash Parkar. The spinners in the team are Dhurmil Matkar and Shams Mulani.
