Rain played a spoil-sport on the 29th day of action in the Vitality T20 Blast. Two out of the eight games that were supposed to be played were abandoned without a ball bowled. However, the rain gods were courteous enough not to apply break on the other games that were played.
Although there weren’t many stand-out performances, the six matches that were played provided just about the right kind of entertainment the fans would expect for. It has almost become a rat-race for the top spot in the North group. Just as Worcestershire reclaimed it the other day, Durham overtook them with a close win. Somerset continues to lead the table in the South group. Here is how things progressed on the 29th day of the T20 Blast.
Nottinghamshire vs Yorkshire – North Group
Yorkshire, who looked great as long as Joe Root was with the team seems to have blown out of proportions at the moment. They were put into bowl first by Nottinghamshire. However, they still managed to pick two wickets at the top despite the great start from the batting team. But the next two batsmen who came in played some terrific cricket. While Jake Libby scored 58 off 33 balls, keeper Tom Moores scored a brilliant 49-ball 80 as they propelled the team to 212 runs in the quota of 20 overs.
The target seemed to have troubled Yorkshire and they completely lost their way once they lost Tom Kohler-Cadmore who scored 72 off 50 balls. Kane Williamson failed to get amongst the runs yet again as he was dismissed for just 11 runs. Harry Gurney picked 3 wickets in the innings as Yorkshire fell short of the target by a mammoth 63 runs.
Brief Scores:
Nottinghamshire: 212/5 in 20 overs (Tom Moores 80*, Jake Libby 58, Fisher 2/52)
Yorkshire: 149/7 in 20 overs (Tom Kohler-Cadmore 72, David Willey 30, Harry Gurney 3/24)
Result: Nottinghamshire won by 63 runs.
Surrey vs Somerset – South Group
Somerset won the toss and opted to bowl first in this game. Surrey lost its top three batsmen early in the innings. However, Will Jacks came to the rescue with 53 off 31 balls. A 32 from Rikki Clarke and a 21 from Tom Curran helped the team get to 176 runs in 20 overs which was somewhat a below-par total on the flat deck.
In the chase, Somerset also lost both its openers early. But Peter Trego, who came in at No. 3, played a great knock which helped the teams’ cause. He scored 70 off 54 balls and got a brilliant support from Corey Anderson down the order who smashed 53 off 31 balls to help get his team over the line with 5 balls to spare.
Brief Scores:
Surrey: 176/9 in 20 overs (Will Jacks 53, R Clarke 32, J Overton 4/24)
