Fans must have their eyes on the calendar as the fifth edition of the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) is set to get underway on July 19. The past seasons of the competition have seen some exciting T20 action with cricket stars from Tamil Nadu state showcasing their prowess. Notably, just like numerous cricket competitions, TNPL couldn’t take place in 2020 due to the COVID-19 crisis. Hence, players would be raring to make a mark in the 2021 season.
All the games will take place at the iconic MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. However, no spectators will be allowed at the venue all thanks to the global pandemic. Nevertheless, fans can catch live action on Television and OTT platforms. TNPL 2021 will see eight teams participating over 28 days for the prestigious title.
Chepauk Super Gillies, Dindigul Dragons, LYCA Kovai Kings, Salem Spartans, iDream Tiruppur Tamizhans, Ruby Trichy Warriors, Nellai Royal Kings, and Siechem Madurai Panthers are the eight sides featuring in the competition. With TNPL following the Round-Robin format, all the teams will meet each other once in the group stage. The top four sides will advance to the playoffs while the rest would be knocked out.
Teams finishing at the top two of the points table will lock horns in Qualifier while the third and fourth-placed team will meet in the Eliminator. The winner of Qualifier one would advance to the finals, whereas the winner of Eliminator will meet the loser of Qualifier 1 in Qualifier2. This clash would determine the second finalist. Subsequently, the summit clash would take place and all eight sides would be determined to feature in that contest.
Speaking of the winners of previous seasons, Tuti Patriots (Salem Spartans) won the inaugural edition in 2015. Chepauk Super Gillies emerged victorious in the 2016 and 2019 seasons while Siechem Madurai Panthers lifted the title in 2018. Hence, the trophy is still elusive for as many as five teams and it would be interesting to see how the competition unfolds.
Notably, international stars like Ravichandran Ashwin, Washington Sundar, and T Natarajan won’t be able to feature in the competition due to national duties. Nevertheless, the tournament would still witness several talented cricketers from the state, and hence, fans can expect an exciting tussle between the bat and the ball.
