The Mumbai Indians and the Chennai Super Kings are the most successful IPL sides with a combined nine titles and two now-defunct CLT20 titles respectively. This famous rivalry is known as the ‘El Clasico’ of the Indian Premier League. The two teams have met each other in four IPL finals. While MS Dhoni & Co. drew first blood in 2010, it is the Mumbai-based franchise that has come out on top in the 2013, 2015, and 2019 editions respectively.

The two champion sides have faced off against each other 32 times in the IPL ever since the inception of the marquee tournament in 2008 and it is Mumbai who have the upper hand having registered 19 victories with Chennai managing to come out on top on the other 13 occasions. Their next clash will be on April 21 at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai.

Ahead of the high-voltage contest, here’s a look at the five memorable encounters between both sides that have found a special place in the hearts of the die-hard cricket fans.

5. IPL 2010 Final

The two teams locked horns in the 2010 final at the DY Patil Stadium. The coin landed in the favour of CSK and they decided to have a bat. MI gained the upper hand after removing Murali Vijay and Matthew Hayden in quick succession but, ‘Mr. IPL’ Suresh Raina ensured that they did not have much to cheer about as his unbeaten 35-ball 57 powered Chennai to 168/5.

The target was not a challenging one and then skipper Sachin Tendulkar who eventually went on to bag the Orange Cap made a strong statement right from the word ‘go’. Unfortunately for him, his dismissal on 48 was arguably the turning point of the match and the middle-order who were impressive throughout the tournament could not make it matter on the big day.

The move of sending in-form Kieron Pollard lower down the order backfired and even though he scored a 10-ball 27, he failed to meet the pressure of the steep asking rate and was caught by Hayden off Albie Morkel in the penultimate over. That brought curtains down on Mumbai as the Yellow Army won their maiden IPL crown by 22 runs.
