Ever since Faf du Plessis made his debut in the Indian T20 League in 2012, he had been a very crucial part of the Chennai setup. He is a brilliant performer in the limited-overs format, and what makes him such a prolific batter is his aptitude to adapt to different situations of the game equally well. He has also had a long career for the South African cricket team.

He was released by Chennai ahead of the 2022 edition and was roped in by Bangalore to be named as the leader of the team. His experience as a player at the Indian T20 League, as well as the captain of a national side, adds a lot to the team. Leading Bangalore this year, he has taken his team to victory in 3 out of the 5 matches they played so far.

Here are Faf du Plessis’ top 5 knocks in the Indian T20 League cricket  –

1. 73 (52) vs Rajasthan in 2012

In his debut season, he knocked off almost half of Chennai’s total runs in a match against Rajasthan . After the Rahul Dravid-led Rajasthan set up a target of 147 for Chennai, Faf opened the innings alongside Subramaniam Badrinath and timed his innings to perfection. His 73 runs came off 52 balls and it included 6 fours and 2 sixes. He was given a new batting position in that game and he did not disappoint the team management and followers one bit as this innings gave the side a consistent opening batter for years to come.

2. 87* (53) vs Punjab in 2020

This was a rare year in which Chennai was struggling to make a mark in the cash-rich league. In a season that was postponed and shifted to the UAE due to Covid-19, Chennai had lost 3 games in a row after winning their inaugural match against Mumbai. In their fifth encounter against Punjab, Faf du Plessis opened alongside Shane Watson. The South African’s unbeaten knock of 87* in 53 balls helped Chennai clinch the game by 10 wickets.

3. 88 (57) vs Punjab in 2022

Joining Bangalore as the team’s skipper in the 15th edition of the tournament, Faf played a captain’s knock as he scored a 57-ball 88 to help his side post a total of 205/2 in their first game of the season, against the Punjab. Though his efforts went in vain after the Bangalore bowlers failed to do their bit, he made a mark in his first-ever game for the side and proved his worth as a player and as a leader for another popular franchise.

4. 95*(60) vs Kolkata in 2021

Faf opened the batting as usual in this game, but this time it was alongside the young gun Ruturaj Gaikwad. In the 15th match of the season against Kolkata, Du Plessis fell just 5 runs short of what could have been a spectacular century but remained unbeaten throughout the game. His 95* (60) helped Chennai post a massive total of 220 in the first innings and they defended the score successfully to win the game by 18 runs.

5. 96 (55) vs Punjab in 2019

The South African star’s blistering 55-ball 96 runs ended up in a losing cause when the Punjab defeated Chennai by six wickets. The South African came very close to getting his maiden ton in the T20 league but was dismissed by Sam Curran. His innings comprised of 10 fours and 4 sixes as he led his team to take Chennai’s total to 170/5 in the first innings.
