The format of T20 cricket is such a fleeting one, and just as fleeting has been the Women’s T20 Challenge. Started only merely a couple of days ago, the time for the last league-stage encounter has already arrived. The scheduling of the matches was such that within 24 hours of defeating the Supernovas in the opening encounter, the Velocity suffered a dramatic collapse, as the Trailblazers, who will take on Supernovas at Sharjah, on Saturday, bundled them for a paltry 47 runs.

Taking 4 wickets for just 9 runs in 3.1 overs, the world’s No. 1 Women T20I bowler Sophie Ecclestone broke the back of Velocity. Well supported by the veteran pacer Jhulan Goswami and left-arm spinner Rajeshwari Gayakwad, who both bagged a couple of wickets, the Trailblazers’ bowlers ensured that their batswomen had nothing more than formalities to complete.

High on morale after a thumping 9-wicket victory behind them, Smriti Mandhana’s army will be keen to script one more to seal their spot in the final scheduled on 9th November.

On the other hand, the Harmanpreet Kaur-led Supernovas suffered a 5-wicket defeat against Velocity in the very first game of the edition. Despite some commendable efforts of Chamari Atapattu and skipper Kaur, who scored 44 and 31 respectively, the bowlers were unable to defend a modest total of 126.

Ayabonga Khaka managed to bag a couple of wickets, whereas Poonam Yadav, Shashikala Siriwardene, and Radha Yadav got one apiece. Although, the inspired efforts from the duo of Sushma Verma and Sune Luss with the bat proved too much for them to tackle. To proceed ahead, the Supernovas need only a win to qualify as they already have a superior net run rate than the Velocity.

Pitch and conditions

The last match produced a rather contrasting result by the standards of Sharjah. Despite the short boundaries, the scoring rate has fallen drastically over time, at this venue. The track is expected to assist the spinners heavily, and both teams need to be wary of the dew.
