Bangladesh was into the series with the goal of leaving an impression on the Caribbean soil, but the hosts did not let them do so as they very easily won the first Test that was played at North Sound in Antigua. But after a terrible loss, the visitors had to win the second and final game against West Indies, at St. Lucia in order to level the series and return with pride.

The visitors had a couple of setbacks. One was the pressure from the previous loss, and the other was former skipper Mominul Haque being dropped from the playing combination. West Indies won the toss and put the visitors to bat first. Openers Tamim Iqbal and Mahmudul Hasan Joy were off to a great start as they kept finding the gaps from the very beginning and aimed to send the ball towards the boundary.

Anderson Phillip dismissed Hasan Joy (10 off 31) to provide his team with the first breakthrough. Najmul Hossain Shanto walked in to bat in the top order and provided good assistance to the set batter, Tamim Iqbal (46 off 67). The latter had found a great rhythm but fell prey to Alzarri Joseph’s pace and as a result, had to walk back falling four runs short of a well-deserved half-century. The hosts had done a great job by picking the openers in the first session.

Bangladesh batting lineup collapses as West Indies take charge

The second session started on a high note, but the bowlers put forward their best and scalped two wickets in consecutive overs to take charge of the baton. Skipper Shakib Al Hasan (8 off 9), who had been the finest performer in the first Test could not work his charm this time around and lost his wicket to Jayden Seales early. Bangladesh’s momentum slowed down as they lost a bunch of players before taking tea.

Liton Das (53 off 70) and Mehidy Hasan (9 off 30) were on the rescue mission post-tea, but Mayers was uncontrollable as he picked the latter to keep the game on their side. Shoriful Islam (26 off 17) looked to cover up for all the lost wickets when he smashed Kemar Roach for three boundaries in an over, followed by two more when he returned for his next.

Seales finished off the work for the hosts by picking the last two batters and dishing the visitors all out for 234 runs. He finished with three wickets in his cap as even Joseph ended with as many, whereas Mayers and debutant Anderson Philip picked two wickets each. West Indies openers Kraigg Brathwaite (30 off 55) and John Campbell (32 off 41) stood strong throughout their part of the innings as the duo ended the first day at 67/0 and West Indies trail by 167 runs.
