After Shimron Hetmyer, Carlos Brathwaite was the next Windies player who bagged the big bucks at the IPL auction. Brathwaite can dispatch the ball into the stands with ease and grace. Furthermore, he is more than capable with the ball in hand. This bulky all-rounder will ply his trade for the Kolkata Knight Riders in the upcoming season of the tournament.
Brathwaite has got fond memories playing at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. It was at this very venue where he struck four consecutive sixes in the World T20 final in 2016 to help his side clinch the trophy. He is expected to play a critical role for the side.
KKR and KXIP fight hard
The 30-year-old invited a bidding war between the Kolkata Knight Riders and the Kings XI Punjab. These were the only two teams interested in bidding for him. The KKR management started it off at INR 75 lakhs. It was a neck-in-neck contest. Kings XI Punjab, who have got the biggest purse in the auction were in the race till INR 4.80 crores. But, it was KKR who ultimately acquired him at a massive INR 5.00 crores.
Carlos Brathwaite has played 33 T20I games thus far in his career. In 20 innings, he scored 266 runs at a strike rate of 122 and picked up 28 wickets. In the IPL, he featured in 14 matches and scored 170 runs at a strike rate of 168. He plied his trade for the Sunrisers Hyderabad in the earlier seasons.
Brathwaite could possibly be the backup option for Andre Russell in the KKR camp. Given that the latter is injury prone, Brathwaite serves up as an excellent replacement. Twitterati was glad to see this monstrous striker of the cricket ball in the KKR side. However, a few seemed to be disappointed with the pick.
Here is how Twitterati reacted:
What a fantastic buy. We all know what Carlos did at Eden back in 2016! Everyone remembers the name!#ComeHome2KKR #IPLAuction #KorboLorboJeetbo

Carlos Brathwaite has to thank Ian Bishop more than his 4 sixes or anyone else fir the he’s been making.
But, 5 Cr is ridiculous .
Cannot score more than 30 with the bat and an average bowler at best.#IPLAuction2019
