When England and New Zealand met in the Group A match at the Sophia Gardens in Cardiff many had memories of the World Cup 2015 match flashing. But there was a change and that was why the result was exactly opposite this time round. England had a wandering approach in ODI cricket then but in the last two years have turned things around drastically to become a side to beat.

Kane Williamson won the toss on a gloomy day with overcast conditions, sun peaking around and rain showering at intervals just enough to not halt the game. The English team had a poor start as Jason Roy failed yet again. But Joe Root and Alex Hales had a restabilising partnership worth 81 for the second wicket. Hales got out soon after his fifty for 56 and Root couldn’t convert his either and was dismissed on 64.

There was a slide of sorts in the middle order and except for Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler who scored 48 and 61 respectively, there were no substantial contributions. But despite a seemingly under par show with the bat they managed to post 310 in 49.3 overs.

For New Zealand, Adam Milne and Corey Anderson took three wickets each while Tim Southee got a couple Trent Boult and Mitchell Santner had one each.

In their response, the Kiwis depended heavily on Martin Guptill and Kane Williamson they had a brief partnership of 62 but Guptill was caught by Root to become Stokes’ first wicket. Williamson then had a 95-run partnership with Ross Taylor but once the skipper got out for 87, the game was all but over.

Taylor was out with just another 10 runs on the board and that was on 168. By the time New Zealand were all down they could just put 223 runs on the board. England’s win has a commendable contribution from skipper Eoin Morgan who put up excellent fields to choke the batsmen and forced them to make mistakes.

Liam Plunkett was the pick of the bowlers for England with his 4-wicket haul. Adil Rashid and Jake Ball shared two each. Ball picked the first wicket that of Luke Ronchi who was dismissed for a golden duck and then removed Taylor, for his performance the seamer was awarded the Man of the Match.
