Usman Khawaja missed out on his maiden double ton as Australia declared their first innings on 475/4 on Day 4 of the third Test match at Sydney Cricket Ground on Saturday (January 7). Rain washed out the first session on Day 4 but the play resumed after lunch with Australian bowlers dominating the remainder of the day. South Africa were at 149/6 when umpires called for stumps on Day 4 with Marco Jansen and Simon Harmer in the middle.

Khawaja remained not out at 195*, his highest score in Test cricket, when Australian captain Pat Cummins declared the innings overnight. It was a harsh decision by the management but the hosts were clearly gunning for another dominating win over the Proteas.

South Africa stutter with the bat again

The returning pacer Josh Hazlewood dismissed South African captain Dean Elgar in the ninth over to give Australia a positive start. Elgar's poor run of form continued as he managed to score only 15 runs off 34 balls before getting caught out behind the stumps off an impressive bouncer frm Hazlewood.

Nathan Lyon then castled opener Sarel Erwee in the 18th over and Cummins took Heinrich Klassen's wicket in the next over to keep Australia in a dominant position. But Temba Bavuma and Khaya Zondo avoided further slump with a crucial 48-run partnership for the fourth wicket.

Hazlewood broke the partnership with Bavuma's wicket who scored 35 runs off 74 balls and Cummins got the better of Zondo pinning him in front of the stumps to give Australia a fifth wicket. Cummins took his third wicket of the day with Kyle Verreynee's wicket as Australia looked hungry for more wickets on Day 4.

But bowling all-rounders Marco Jansen and Simon Harmer avoided further wickets on Day 4 and played out the remaining overs. South Africa are still trailing by 326 runs and will try to avoid a clean sweep on Day 5 but the Australian camp will be motivated after taking six wickets and will target a whitewash on last day.
