Chennai Super Kings (CSK) breezed past the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) to win yet another game in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021. It was a clinical performance from the Men in Yellow as Dwayne Bravo led with the ball for them to restrict RCB and then each of their contributed well to win the game easily with six wickets in hand.

After being put in to bat first, RCB got off to a brilliant start courtesy Virat Kohli and Devdutt Padikkal. The duo understood that it is better to play the shots when the ball is hard and new. Kohli led the way first and played a few glorious shots giving the glimpse of his best form returning. Padikkal soon took over to smash the CSK bowlers at will. RCB did well in the powerplay but soon things slowed down.

The Sharjah was not the usual flat one and the spinners were able to put the batsmen in trouble. Even then, Kohli and Padikkal continued playing well to keep their team ahead. The duo added 111 runs in 13.2 overs before Kohli, after getting to his half-century, was holed out in the deep off Dwayne Bravo. AB de Villiers was promoted up the order but it was Padikkal who ran the show with some exceptional shots.

The stage seemed set for RCB to go bonkers in the last four overs only being one down. But Shardul Thakur bowled a terrific over to bring their run-scoring to a screeching halt. The man sent back De Villiers and Padikkal, who was batting well on 70 with five fours and three sixes, back off consecutive deliveries in the 17th over. With the surface slowing down considerably, there was no looking back for CSK from here on.

Dwayne Bravo was at his best in the death as RCB could add only 16 runs in the last three overs to end at 156/6 in their 20 overs. Bravo was the best bowler for CSK with the figures of 3/24 in his four overs while Thakur also returning with 2/29.

CSK canter home comfortably

The 157-run target was not a huge one but the Sharjah surface was tricky on the day. CSK needed their openers Faf du Plessis and Ruturaj Gaikwad to get them off to a flyer with the new ball. And they did the same. Gaikwad just carried from where he left off in the last game to show the range of his shots. Faf du Plessis, on the other hand, was classy with his shots as usual.

They stitched 71 runs together for the opening wicket before Gaikwad got out to Yuzvendra Chahal thanks to a brilliant catch from Virat Kohli. In the very next over, Glenn Maxwell’s surprise introduction brought about Du Plessis’ wicket and RCB were suddenly back in the game. However, Moeen Ali and Ambati Rayudu shut the door down on them with some enterprising yet cautious batting.

Both the batsmen took advantage of small boundaries to clobber boundaries at will off RCB spinners, Chahal and Wanindu Hasaranga. The quick-fire 47-run partnership just ended the contest in the game. Harshal Patel returned to snaffle both Rayudu (32) and Moeen (23) but by then, the game was done and dusted.

Kohli brought on the spinners with MS Dhoni and Suresh Raina in the middle which made put pressure on CSK for a brief while. But the latter broke the shackles to make sure there was no last minute harakiri from the Men in Yellow. CSK chased down the target in the 19th over to register their seventh win of the season while RCB lose their seventh consecutive game in the UAE.
