Pakistan would be fairly satisfied with how things panned out in the opening day’s play of the first Test against the West Indies. At the Sabina Park, Kingston, Jamaica, the visitors were shot out for 217 in a mere 70.3 overs. However, Mohammad Abbas came to the party, picked two wickets, and gave his team some joy. The hosts, on the other hand, will be looking for a better show with the bat.

Pakistan crumble

After winning the toss and electing to field, the Caribbean bowlers didn’t let the Pakistan batters settle. Imran Butt, Azhar Ali, and Babar Azam got into double digits but failed to convert. Jayden Seales, who made his Test debut against South Africa earlier this year, picked up the early wickets of Abid and Azhar. Kemar Roach accounted for the crucial wicket of Babar, who got 30 with four fours.

Mohammad Rizwan looked extremely promising before he got out to Jason Holder. From there on, the 85-run stand between Fawad Alam and Faheem Ashraf got Pakistan back into the game. Ashraf was the most attacking of the two as he scored 44 at a strike rate of 66.67. Alam, on the other hand, was sedate as his 56 with six fours came off 117 balls. It was Holder, who dismissed him.

West Indies collapse as 12 wickets fall on Day one

Hasan Ali’s cameo of 14 runs took Pakistan to 217 in their first innings. Among the Caribbean bowlers, Seales and Holder were the most successful with three wickets each. Roach picked up two wickets as well. The Caribbean team has had a torrid time in their first innings as well.

In his second over, Mohammad Abbas sent back Kieran Powell and Nkrumah Bonner for ducks, leaving West Indies at 1/2 in 2.3 overs. Kraigg Brathwaite and Roston Chase are the overnight batters. After the day’s play, Holder talked about his team needing to deliver with the bat.

“I had a few days to prepare (after white-ball cricket) and for me, it’s just about getting my rhythm back in this format and it wasn’t a bad transition, we had a good day as a bowling unit. It was slower than expected and we had to be a little fuller and made them play as much as possible.

“We would have taken this first innings total, disciplined bowling by everyone. Just need to apply ourselves with the bat, give ourselves a good chance to get a really big score,” Holder was quoted as saying after the day’s play.

Here’s how the netizens reacted to the day’s play:
