Following a couple of thumping wins versus the ECB XI and Leicestershire in the warm-up matches, Shreyas Iyer and his India A team came into the match with a positive frame of mind. However, they couldn’t get past the England Lions in the opening match of the triangular series in Derby and lost by 7 wickets and with 49 balls remaining in the match.

Rishabh Pant steadies the ship

On a decent batting wicket, Iyer won the toss and elected to bat. Prithvi Shaw and Mayank Agarwal opened and just when it seemed they got the hosts bowing by the scruff of their necks, but Tom Helm accounted for Shaw’s dismissal. All of Mayank (23), Iyer (42) and Shubman Gill (37) got decent starts, but none could convert them into a substantial score.

Rishabh Pant somehow injected some momentum into the innings with a knock of 64 runs from 55. He was nipped out by Liam Livingstone in the 33rd over and all of a sudden India were 7 down with nearly seventeen overs to go. The lower-order showed some resilience and the likes of Axar Patel along with Deepak Chahar added some useful runs to guide their team to a respectable score of 232.

Gubbins dominate

Iyer’s men needed early wickets to put the skids under their opponents, and Thakur drew first blood as he trapped Tom Kohler-Cadmore for 7 runs. India had to wait for 145 more deliveries to pick their next wicket. Meanwhile, Nick Gubbins and Sam Hain racked up a stand of 134 runs to help the Lions clinch the ascendancy. Axax broke the partnership, much to the relief of India.

Liam Livingstone joined Gubbins for the third wicket and notched 61 runs along with him to take the sting out of the visitors. In the meantime, Gubbins brought up a stupendous knock and saw his team through to a victory with a knock of 128 runs in 132 balls including 10 fours and 2 sixes. Thakur dismissed Livingstone with the score at 2010, but by then, the match had become a mere formality.
