While the first match of the Women’s World Cup 2022 between New Zealand and West Indies ended up being a thriller, the second game was not as closely fought. South Africa and Bangladesh met at the University Oval in Dunedin for game two of the tournament with the Proteas coming out triumphant.
Having won the toss, Bangladesh put their opponents in to bat. South Africa were slow to start with having lost their opener Tazmin Brits for not many on the board. Though the other opener in Laura Wolvaardt tried to grab the initiative scoring 41 off 52 balls with five fours, Bangladesh kept chipping away with the wickets.
South Africa were in a spot of bother at 119-5 in the 34th over of their innings before a solid effort by the middle order brought their innings back on track. All-rounder, Marizanne Kapp, who scored 42 of 45 was supported by Chloe Tryon who made a quick 39 of 40 balls with one four and two sixes. The South African innings folded in the 50th over at 207. Fariha Trisna was the pick of the bowlers for Bangladesh picking up three wickets.
Bangladesh lose track after 50-run opening stand
In response, Bangladesh got off to a good start with their openers putting up a fifty-run stand. However, they lost track soon after with both the set batters being dismissed in a span of two overs by right-arm medium bowler Ayabonga Khaka. Khaka proved to be instrumental in South Africa’s bowling effort ending with figures of 4-32.
Bangladesh could not recover at any point in the chase falling short of the target by 32 runs with the entire side being dismissed for 175. Khaka was named Player of the Match for her brilliant effort with the ball.
South Africa, with this win, have opened their account in the mega tournament and their next match is against Pakistan on March 11th in Mount Maunganui. For Bangladesh, they remain in Dunedin for their next match against the hosts New Zealand on March 7th.

All the 6 South African bowlers today (Shabnim Ismail, Marizanne Kapp, Ayabonga Khaka, Masabata Klass, Sune Luus, Chloe Tryon) – have all made their ODI debut in 2012 or earlier, and are still bowling in 2022.#CWC22 #BANvSA

Still plenty of twists and turns in Dunedin with Bangladesh requiring 48 off 34 and now with a little bit of momentum going forward

That embrace from Marizanne Kapp! ❤️ #TeamPacer #CWC22 #WhattaPlayer
Chloe Tryon has been very impressive through this spell. Nice way to settle into a rhythm going ahead.

Sure, she hasn’t been attacked, but if she can give SA 6-7 overs every game, that gives them so much flexibility. #CWC22
