Shubman Gill, the 19-year-old from Punjab, has recently been called up for the ODI and T20I series against New Zealand. He replaced KL Rahul, who has been excluded from the limited-overs squad and has been sent home following the controversial episode in Koffee With Karan. The last one year or so has turned out to be equivalent to a fairy-tale for the young right-handed batsman.

After making his List A debut in February 2017, Gill forayed into first-class cricket later that year and ever since he hasn’t looked back. He was appointed as the vice-captain of the India U19 team for the World Cup in New Zealand. Shubman didn’t flatter to deceive by any stretch of the imagination and turned out to be the second-highest run-scorer with 372 runs in six matches at an average of 124.

Shubman weaves his magic

During the event, he also scored a superlative century in the semi-final against Pakistan. Thereafter, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) picked him up in the Indian Premier League (IPL) auction. Albeit he didn’t get to play a whole lot of matches, he impressed in the limited opportunities he got. He also scored a match-winning half-century against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the iconic Eden Gardens.

Thereafter, Gill was drafted into the India A team and he wielded magic to catch the eyes of the selectors. Recently, he played four first-class matches for Punjab in the ongoing Ranji Trophy. Though his team couldn’t progress to the knockouts, Shubman was able to inflict mayhem in the opposition camps. In the very first match he played against Tamil Nadu, Gill racked up a stunning 268 runs.

The pugnacious potential didn’t stop and went on to score 10, 148, 24, 69*, 91 and 8 in his next few innings. In the meantime, Twitter wants Gill to bat in the number four slot, not only against the Black Caps, but also in the World Cup, scheduled to start on May 30. Ambati Rayudu hasn’t been able to do well in that position in Australia because of which the fans want Gill at number four.
