Veteran Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin is eagerly waiting for the 2018 edition of the IPL. The star spinner had missed out on being a part of the competition last year due to an injury. Since then, he has not found much luck in the limited overs cricket and is out of the national side in the limited overs setup. In a bid to make a comeback, Ashwin has set his sights on the IPL 2018.

Ravichandran Ashwin will be playing for the Kings XI Punjab in the tournament. In an attempt to experiment, Ashwin has been working in leg spin variations. While many feel this could be a wrong move, former cricketer Daniel Vettori has backed the decision taken by Ashwin to experiment.

“Everything Ashwin does, he does well. He is a highly skilled bowler that’s the thing I like about this style of cricketers. He has variations, he is prepared to try things and he has done so well. His record speaks for itself in all formats and he will continue doing that,” quoted Daniel Vettori as per the quotes in Hindustan Times.

Ashwin possibly sees the analytical side of things

Meanwhile, veteran English spinner Monty Panesar feels that it is the engineering background of Ravichandran Ashwin that is making him think in analytical ways. He noted that being an engineer, Ashwin knows how to work out on angles and it is perhaps because of this reason that he is trying out so many variations.

Furthermore, Panesar expressed his excitement to see how Ashwin will execute the plans in the 2018 edition of the IPL. He admitted that even he could have tried such things during his playing days.

“See, I studied maths, Ashwin studied engineering. He has got a very analytical and mathematical sort of mindset. Cricket is about angles, he is always going to look for those angles… and I am sure he is thinking probably leg-spin, carrom ball. Why, he has been so brilliant because he has got that sort of engineering mindset, which gives him a competitive advantage over other spinners,” Monty Panesar quoted.

“He is probably just working out things, and it will be interesting to see how leg-spin turns out. It’s brilliant that he is trying so much different variations. That’s something I should have done earlier when I was playing. It’s good to see how spin is evolving from a spinner’s point of view,” he added further.
