Former Pakistan cricketer Waqar Younis has tipped Pakistan to triumph in the upcoming ICC Cricket World Cup next year in England. The team led by Sarfraz Ahmed has recently done well in the country and is currently playing the two-match Test series against the home side. They sensationally thumped England at the iconic Lord’s and are expected to continue in the same vein in the second Test as well. However, the former Pakistani fast bowler is of the opinion believes that the team has what it to takes to deliver in the mega event.

Waqar highlighted the recent record of the team in the United Kingdom while saying that Pakistan are one of the top favourites to win the title in 2019. No wonder they are playing some impressive cricket right now and have stunned the home side with their performances. However, he has also felt that it is too early to predict the winner with a year to go.

“It is too early to say who will be the winner as there is still a year to go, but Pakistan’s recent track record in England has been impressive,” Waqar Younis was quoted as speaking at the launch event of next year’s World Cup at the iconic Brick Lane in London.

Waqar Younis recalled that the Men in Green have always done well in England in the ICC events and given the way they are playing currently, it will not be easy for other teams to beat them. “They finished runners-up in the 1999 edition and then won the T20 World Cup in 2009. Last year they won the Champions Trophy which shows Pakistan’s [impressive] record in England,” he added.

Morgan echoes Younis’ words

Eoin Morgan, England skipper, also attended the event and praised Pakistan for their triumph in the Champions Trophy last year. “In last year’s Champions Trophy, Pakistan had a very strong and young team and was one of the best teams of the tournament. We have to consider both Pakistan and India as well as ourselves and continue to learn from our mistakes,” he said.

The ICC Cricket World Cup will kick-off on May 30 next year as England will take on South Africa in the tournament opener.
