In a recent auction of sports memorabilia, the 1992 World Cup jersey of Wasim Akram fetched the highest bids. He was closely followed by the 2003 World Cup jersey of Sachin Tendulkar. The sports memorabilia auction took place at the Cricket Club of India (CCI) at the Brabourne Stadium. The auction was the first of its kind in India. It was organised by Kathiwada Arts and Sports (KAS) in association with Kathiwada foundation.
The auction had several big names attending the function. The likes of former Indian cricketers Salim Durani and Farokh Engineer were present at the venue. The big names from media and stats world were also present. Ayaz Memon and Boria Majumdar attended the coveted auction. Rahul Bose was one of the Bollywood celebs to show up for the event. The agenda behind auction is to generate the awareness among the sports marketing scenario in India.
The auction saw Don Bradman’s commemorative goin go under the hammer. It was sold for 36000 INR. Another coin that was auctioned was Sachin Tendulkar’s silver coin minted by the East India Company. That was sold for 15000 INR. Surprisingly, there were no takers for Brian Lara’s Test jersey. The big moment arrived when two of the biggest auctions were made. Sachin Tendulkar and Wasim Akram had given their World Cup jerseys for the event.
Wasim Akram gave his World Cup winning jersey of 1992 and Sachin gave away his 2003 World Cup jersey. Wasim’s jersey had the base price of INR 70000. The auction went up and up with the bids going higher and higher. The bids lasted for about 8 minutes before the jersey was eventually sold at a whopping INR 340000. The next in line was Sachin’s jersey. The same process took place again but Sachin failed to cross the mark set by Wasim Akram.
His jersey fetched INR 330000 and fell short by a margin of INR 10000. Well, both players have had great competition on the field. Needless to say, Wasim Akram had the upper hand on this particular contest.
